Out of the Inbox - A Plea to Frum Businesses

Sent in by a Chaptzem reader
I feel a bit saddened for the principals of the Kosher Gym. I know Yehudah and Ori personally from my days as a member and from when my wife was the graphic designer for the gym's magazine, Frum & Fit. I have only known them to be men of integrity and mevakshei Da'as Torah. That said, I would like to use this whole episode as an example of the changing world and its effect on the state of Frum Business today.
I am not a Rav and I won't even pretend to know whether the internet is a wonderful Bracha or a Ma'aseh Satan. Certainly, Lashon Hara and Motzie Shem Ra are serious business, especially when it affects the livelihood of others.
But the point I am trying to make is not a question of right or wrong. It is the Metzius. The fact that a pedestrian has the right of way will not heal his injuries when he is hit by a car that runs the light. No, it's not fair that individuals and businesses can be maligned so easily on blogs that allow anonymous comments. It's all irrelevant really. This is the world we live in in 2008. Conversations are happening and you cannot control them. The best thing to do is to try to bring the conversation into your house. To be transparent. To engage your customers. This is the cost of doing business in the 21st century.
The backlash about the Lipa ban also proves this to be true. Lipa is now a bigger celebrity than ever. Instead, it was Da'as Torah that came out wounded. There was an effort by kannoim to control the conversation but in the internet age it cannot be controlled anymore. Instead, Da'as Torah was the victim. I believe the same holds true with the Slifkin issue from a few years back. I am not arguing right or wrong (I don't have the Pleitzus). I am just looking at the facts on the ground.
The takeaway is that frum businesses have to pay attention to what is happening. This has been going on already for several years in the secular world and is now starting to show up here as well. All it took was a blog post from an influential blogger named Jeff Jarvis called "Dell Hell" to get the blogosphere buzzing in a way that was quite damaging to Dell Computer. Their eventual response was to join the conversation with a blog of their own and invite - yes, invite people to come talk about Dell in a way that was very candid and not always pleasant. But you know what? It's a strategy of transparency that more and more companies are finding to be effective at really building customer loyalty.
J-Biz owners, WAKE UP! You cannot get away with angering your customers for all that long. You must start engaging them in a way that builds enthusiasm for your brand and company. Remarkable customer service, satisfaction, elation is necessary now more than ever. The value that you give your customers is necessary now more than ever. Your transparency is necessary now more than ever. Contract or no contract, you cannot get away with charging fees for fine print or nickel and dimeing your customers for items and services that should be free. If your customers complain about something - it is a blessing - you now have a new insight into satisfying them. How much money are you spending on marketing when the most effective thing to do is to keep the ones you have happy and feeling value from what you give them and the way that you treat them?
If it is expensive to put in a security system to catch "cheaters", then take away their reason to cheat. If it is too difficult to run a business where frum people are too demanding, then it is time to get out of the business. I am not talking to KG Fitness, I am talking to everyone who does business in the frum community. Wake up before it is too late and you find yourself on the next blog.

Comments:
If you think the backlash against disreputable frum business owners is gaining momentum, just wait and watch what transpires with the state of disfunctional orthodox fundamentalism.
The obssesive chumra craze is beginning to have its effect on yidden who think for themselves. With the help of the internet, people are beginning to question the "daas torah' of our so called gedolim, whether its a ban on Slifkin, Lipa, digital cameras, bicycles, obsession with tznius, or scores of other mindless prohibitions.
Soon people will question the veracity of the entire Ultra-frum mindset and its irrational purpose will collapse of its own ponderous nonsense.

GREAT! Just another Jewish Blogger trying to promote his blog without having anything inciteful to say. This guy contradicted himself and thinks people should take him seriously. Please stop posting some of these ridiculous articles, it makes this whole blog a joke.
Please show where he got his marketing degree from and which ad campaigns did he oversee?
Don't think I am a KG supporter, but just post things useful to see what happened and not peoples opinions on the matter. Maybe get a hold of some contracts so we can see what the whole fuss is really about.

...and filing for Chapter 11.
It's unfortunate that so many business in general, and it seems so many frum businesses in particular, are run without the customers' needs and wants in mind; remember: they are the pillars of your business. If you don't address their needs & wants somebody else will and then you'll be wondering why your shop is empty...

Anon 9:43,
You sound like the fatalists of the 18th century. The Mendelsons et al also 'predicted' the fall and utter collapse of the frum jew. Yet, here we are, stronger than ever, 200+ years later.

This post is so on the mark. It is not just businesses. The internet in general and the Blogosphere in particular have fundamentaly changed the way things work and many people do not yet grasp it. The same admonition applies to non profits, yeshivas, shuls etc. etc. etc. The balance of power has now shifted away from top down management in whatever form it takes, to the public. People and institutions who before were not held accountable, now have to realize that they must operate with transparency and with the notion that they are being watched. The public will no longer be able to be mislead or lied to and the public will demand justice. Those who choose to ignore the new reality do so at their own peril.
"It's enough" - you must realize what a joke you are. Inciteful? You must mean insightful. A very different meaning.
What he says makes sense. It's basics taught in business school.
As for the frummies...well...I'm still waiting for a ban on the pretty, non-human hair that baldies in Boro Park wear. They look so much nicer than real human hair. Shouldn't there be a prohibition?
Wait...I hear something coming,..

CASE in Point.
I recently went to buy an MP3 player to listen to shiurim while I exercise. I went to an electronics store in a frum neighborhood. The service was lousy, the range was limited and the items were overpriced. The staff were rude and not interested in helping me find out the information I needed in order to make an informed choice.
So I left and went to Best Buy.
The range of products was wide ranging, the prices were cheaper and the staff was informed and anxious to help me out with a smile. The salesperson wanted to know what I needed it for and why so that he could guide me to the correct product.
So please tell me why I should buy from these "frum" stores that behave like this. If anyone has any recommendations for a frum store that values customer service please post and I'll try there next time.

Re: Digital camera ban-- I just learned of this last week. Apparently, the concern is that girls will take digital cameras with them and take pictures of themselves and their friends having fun, and while having fun (or perhaps just dressed in swimwear, as girls tend to do when they go swimming), pictures will be taken, and, chas v'shalom, a person of the male gender might end up seeing these pictures of the girls.
There you go.
There you go.
Author may be right in general, but KG has had myriads of frenzied, angry screaming customers or actually "try-out" customers who were cheated outright. The most interesting thing about KG, is that it survived altogether. Where it's heading now for the Orthodox consumer remains to be seen. I have spoke to current members and Chassidic ones as well, who don't fear the changes to come. Some of them are looking forward to dealing with whatever they bring on wholeheartedly as long as it remains gender-based etc.
Time will tell.
