A Town of Monroe resident, who is a leader in the United Monroe organization, has filed a petition to annex 336 acres of Town of Monroe Land into the Town of Blooming Grove. John Allegro cites "unity of purpose" as the reason for the move which would counter efforts to expand the Hasidic Village of Kiryas Joel and "to fight the forces of evil."
A Developer with ties to KJ last year filed a petition to annex 507 acres of land into the village for expansion purposes. United Monroe opposed that move.
Allegro, speaking Sunday night on a blog radio program, said the Town of Blooming Grove and Village of South Blooming Grove have stringent zoning laws.
"If you wanted to develop on rural, residential land in the Village of South Booming Grove, you would have to go through a litany of permits and tests all designed to ensure that there be preservation of our resources of this beautiful town that we live in," Allegro said. "To us that is more in tune with, and much more in harmony, with the quality of life that all of the signers of this document seek as part of this petition."
United Monroe Chairwoman Emily Convers said preserving the zoning of Blooming Grove is important and that annexation of land for the purpose of changing zoning is "not in the spirit of annexation law to do so."
