Deadline looms for Cuomo on Kiryas Joel bill

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has until Wednesday to either sign or veto a bill that could change the outcome of a heated turf war involving a Hasidic community in Orange County.

The Hasidic Village of Kiryas Joel is overseeing a proposed land expansion to double the municipality in size.

Cuomo has until midnight Wednesday to sign the bill that would immediately give Orange County control over the contentious expansion plans.

Assemblyman James Skoufis wrote the bill amid allegations of corruption and quality-of-life concerns about the land deal between Monroe and Kiryas Joel.

Officials in Kiryas Joel have called the law discriminatory and unconstitutional.
