Petition to create Town of North Monroe to be filed today

Officials in the Village of Kiryas Joel are expected to file a petition containing some 2,200 signatures with the Orange County Clerk's Office today calling for the creation of the Town of North Monroe.

If the proposal is approved, it would break the village away from the Town of Monroe, merge additional land adjacent into Kiryas Joel and create the new entity of the Town of North Monroe with an estimated 20,000 new residents.

Monroe Town Supervisor Harley Doles, who proposed the separate towns two years ago, favors the two-town plan, believing it is the best for the Hasidic Jewish community and the remainder of the town's residents.

"Monroe is not prepared for it, the Monroe-Woodbury School District is not prepared for it and if the Town of North Monroe is going to be the best option to create peace between the two towns and the school districts, that may well be the best option," Doles said.

Once petitions are filed, the county legislature must approve the plan and if lawmakers give the okay, Town of Monroe residents would vote on it.
