Thousands of Hasidic Jews to hold annual celebration at spiritual leader's tomb in Ukraine
Thousands of Hasidic Jews from around the world gathered Thursday in the central Ukrainian town of Uman to mark the Jewish New Year, or Rosh Hashana, at the tomb of their spiritual leader.
Some 12,000 Jews from the Bratslav Hasidic movement had gathered in the quiet town by Thursday to pray at the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav, who died in 1810.
Bearded and wearing black hats, participants began setting up giant tents and a big cafeteria to feed the 20,000 organizers were expecting before Rosh Hashana begins at sundown Friday.
They prayed, danced and recited psalms throughout the town, which was peppered with Hebrew posters during this men-only event.
"This is ... a chance to touch the living faith of our fathers," said Borys Varminshteyn, of Myrhorod in central Ukraine.
Nachman, the great grandson of the founder of Hasidism, is renowned for his mystical interpretations of Jewish texts, and promised on his deathbed to help anyone who came and prayed beside his tomb. Nachman taught that high spirituality could be achieved through prayer, meditation and good deeds.
His promise to hear the prayers of those who came to his burial place — and his suggestion that prayer carried more power during Rosh Hashana — has been drawing thousands of pilgrims yearly.
The officially atheist Soviet Union sharply restricted access, but Jews have been able to visit freely since Ukraine's 1991 independence.
Nachman's tomb — part of a destroyed Jewish cemetery — has been renovated, and a giant synagogue was built nearby. The religious visitors have had a noticeable impact on Uman, about 200 kilometers (125 miles) south of the capital, Kiev. There is a kosher supermarket and a new hotel that respects Hasidim's requirements — the rooms have no mirrors, and bathtubs are replaced with showers.

Comments:
no mirrors?
showers instead of baths?
uh....am I missing somthing?
is that a breslover thing?
are there any 'interesting' things about chassidim that the ukrainians believe?
where did they come up with that?
is this enough questions to get my point across?
does anybody ever read the comments?
anybody care enough to reply?

No baths, since showers usually take up less space and it is what men usually use. No mirrors, because on a wall where they would hang a mirror, they can place a bunk bed for two men to sleep. You must understand that this is a very spiritual time and people go there to pray and not to be busy looking into the mirror. There are literally thousands of men who make this trip, and space is used wisely. A happy and a healthy new year to all !
If you see the pictures of the people that go there you will understand why they do not nee a mirror or a bath, they do not use these items all year....take a deep sniff and you will know what I mean.
yes, I agree with the previous post, if all chasidim would bathe more often and use underarm deoderant and look in the mirror to make sure that they look presentable, they would make a kiddush hashem not a chilul hashem ,like they do now when they come between all types of people and you can not stand next to them because of the bad odor from them..come on! get a life! smell and look good ....
Davening in uman Rosh Hashannah is such a beautiful thing. Why do they have to be disparaged like that?Wishing all jews a happy and healthy year.
All the Yiden in the whole world should have a happy and healthy year.To all Yiden in Uman, please for kovad habreies, bathe your selves good, spray yourselves with underarm deoderant, so that you should not be oiver on ''bal teshakzi''!! get a life.. and smell good and dress presentable, do not give yourselves a bad image that all people going to Uman are a bunch of smelly unkept slobs...
Everyone should be blessed with:
12 months of Nachas.
50.5 weeks of Gezunt.
354 days of Brochos.
8,496 hours of Mazal.
509,760 minutes of Simcha.
30,585,600 seconds of Peace of Mind.
A Happy, Healthy, Sweet and Prosperous New Year, with the time to enjoy it as well.
Let us daven that it is blessed with peace!
L'shona Tovah.

Those that go to Uman are doing so because R' Nachman of Breslov promised a good year to all those (his Chasidim and others) that daven at his kever at this time of year. If it means using showers over baths and giving up mirrors, is it not worth it?
Thousands of highly regarded, sophisiticated professionals went this year.
As far as the deodorant issue, how about being Melamed Z'chus to all the Chasidim who are Hatzolah members, Bikur Cholim volunteers and other Chasidim involved in all other kinds of Chesed, all of who I have met, use deodorant.
- From a total Misnaged who looks for the virtues in people.

Am I the only one who thinks Uman is a terrible waste of good Jewish money -- year after year... [???]
this is a stupid post. If you don't want to go to Uman because you can't take a bath or look in the mirror then don't go. If you think everyone stinks don't go either. Some people go to daven, others go because it is "an IN thing" and they want to have a part in the action. Those who go apparently don't go there to take a bath or to look in the mirror. All these comments about hygiene in Uman are inane.
For the person that wrote that this is a ''stupid post''please read the following..
I just stated a fact that is true.Yes, the people that go to Uman are all Erliche Yiden, and I hope that they were mispallel for themselves and for all of Klal Yisroel, but the fact is that most people that go to Uman are unkept , and smelly, go look at the pictures, and you will see what i mean, you can smell them thru the pictures, so the fact that they do not have mirrors or bathtubs proves my case. They think that the more you smell the more chasidish you are..I am also very chasidish and I use underarm deoderant everyday..does this make me less chasidish because of that ? of course not..in which chadishe sefer does it say that you are not allowed to use underarm deoderant ? no place..so tell all Frume chasidehe people to bathe, spray underarm deoderant and smell good ,not like rotten fish....

You are hereby appointed to stand on 13th Avenue and Lee Avenue in your spare time, SNIFF all passers by and advise them accordingly about what you have experienced.
You seem to be very emotional about it. I'm sure you will have many Chassidim to your sect. You can now be called the
"Deodo-RANTER" REBBE.
GOOD LUCK.

Thank you for your response to my post, it seems that you do not fully understand the deoderant situation..I want to bring to the attention of all that it is not the frum chasidehe way of living to have bad body odor and not to bathe and spray underarm deoderant..I was many times in my life in the presence of big Tzadikim such as the Previous Satmar Rebbe Z'L Rabeinu Yoel and the previous Bobover Rabbi Z'L Reb Shlome, they were the typical example of how a chasid is supposed to look and smell, they were the cleanest and good smelling people that can be..will you tell me that they did not know what is allowed? of course they knew, and they knew that for Kovod Habries halachacly you must be clean..so if I go on 13 ave. or Lee Ave. and smell the chasidim with the rotten fish smell, they are going against the Torah..I go every day to a big Mikvah in Boro Park and when you walk in there it smells like a fish market..there are a few normal people that wash with soap and shampoo and after the mikva put on underarm deoderant and the other chasidim look on them negativly..WHY? beacuse they want to be and smell clean ? so let all the frum chasidshe people that go around stinking from underarm odor get their act together and start acting according to Halacha..and may we have a beutiful good smelling and normal looking Am Yisroel !!!
