I was originally disgusted to read about this waste of money, but then I saw that 100% of the money is going to tzedakah - the auction winner will write the check outr to bikur cholim. That being the case, I think it's a nice thing - I'm sure the winner of the auction had in mind that he is benefiting tzedakah.
