Williamsburg attempted rape - Fact or fiction?!

Now that mass hysteria has set in and hitching has been banned and everyone is being blamed for an attempted rape in Williamsburg, let's take a deep breath and mull it over for a moment. Did this attempted rape really occur, or is it just another one of those typical Williamsburg scare and control tactics? This isn't the first time that a horrific story has been spread in Williamsburg in order to invoke fear and control in the community.

The whole hitching issue has long been of controversy between the Williamsburg bus company and the community. The bus company loses a lot of money due to the hitching and has unsuccessfully tried many times to get the Williamsburg community leaders to asser it. Could this be a last-ditch effort on their behalf to stop the hitching?

The point is, before we go around condemning Chasidishe men and their 'taivos' and inability to 'help themselves', and how women should stay home and cook, let's stop and think. Is this so called attempted rape fact, or just a mere scare and control tactic, created to further push down and oppress the community in general and women in specific.

Comments:
the story is probebly true. because i dont think that shomrim is working for the williamsburg boro park bus co. & if they whold want to make such a story to scare women the whould do it winter time when williamsburg is here, i can gurantee you that over 60% women dident & will not hear about this story. they are in the mountains busy SHTRIKING GARTLECH...

Go tell it to the Lady that was beaten and cut by this maniac

you are nuts!!!!!!

The problem isn't with men hitchhiking with another man. It is when a woman hitchhikes with a man.

The bottom line is that a woman must be tzenuah at ALL times. In the house and especially out. She must avoid Yichud situations, in a car or elsewhere. These are general rules, and have nothing to do with this incident in particular.

Have you really stooped that low? There is a woman that required serious hand surgery, and may loose use of her hand. Yet you choose to ignore that fact and accuse people of making it up?
What you may want to do, is ask if this woman really knew the person, and had some bad intentions, and then things got out of hand. But to accuse the Rabbonim of making it up? No way.

Chana,

This issue may focus on woman only but this should be a warning to woman and men as well, you can never trust anyone if you're a men or woman. Me as a driver I refuse to pick up hitchers unless I know the person even it's a hitch for 2 blocks.. the risk of picking up a stranger who might rob you or whatever he may do it's just not worthed.

i am starting to think that nuchem rosenberg is right... the rapist is probebly a m'lamad...

We need to be dan lekaf zechus this woman. As far as I know, we do not know what her reasoning was. It is true, that it is not a modest thing for a woman to just get into a car with a man. But maybe she had an emergency and needed to get to BP?
The fact is, we do not know the facts. And until we do, as Yidden, we CAN NOT pass judgement on anyone.
In addition, if a lesson can be learnt from this horrible ordeal, whether 100% true or not, it is still a lesson worth learning.
Women need to be cautious. Women need to modest. Men need to control themselves and respect woman.
Any other lessons you can take from it, please do. But the crazy amount of Loshon Harah and rumors this whole thing has caused is just a chillel Hashem.

To all of you who are still speculating if this is true:

I just learned who the victim is. I know her personally, and it's 100% true. I still have to find out the details, but nothing has been cooked up!

Where does nuchem rosenberg speak about this story? Seems like i am behind times.

It doesnt matter if this story is true or made up. What is importatnt is that we should all be aware of the possible dangers that surround us and that we should all be prepared for anything.

Just as we teach our children that they should NEVER get into a car with strangers, we need to follow similar lessons ourselves before chas visholom anything bad happens.

This is the first I am hearing of this story but I can tell you that boys (bochurim)must also be careful as I know of stories of boys being molested hitching to or from willie to boro park. one man was known to cruise for this specific perpose

FIRST OF ALL, THE ENGLISH NEWSPAPERS HAD THE STORY. AN ACQUANTANCE OF MINE KNOWS THIS YOUNG WOMAN, SHE CAME IN WITH HER HAND BLEEDING AFTER SHE ATTEMPTED TO TAKE THE KNIFE AWAY FROM THE ALLEGED ATTACKER. ALSO, I AM SURE THIS STORY CAN BE VERIFIED BY THE POLICE, SINCE I AM SURE THIS WOMAN CALLED 911.
AND AS FOR MAKING THIS STORY UP SO THAT THE BUS SERVICE BETWEEN WMSBG AND BORO PARK SHOULD HAVE MORE PASSENGERS, THAT IS RIDICULOUS. THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT NOBODY SHOULD GET INTO A CAR WITH A STRANGER.

I actually believe that the reason this lady took a hitch is, part of the problem with the bus service, (as everyone knows the bus service is taking the passengers "for a ride" there is no customer service etc etc. etc. -) the biggest problem in the summer is that buses only run, once an hour, I would assume that this lady has been waiting for that bus over (or at least near that time-frame) an hour, so after so much frustration she decided to take "un-willingly" a ride with a stranger.
There has been a considerate movement lately before the DOT annual meetings to permit competition on this route. You may recall that they nearly lost their license a couple of yrs. ago at a hearing where customers complained about torn seats, and raining-in, no A/C in the summer, no steam in the winter - and on top of all, rude attitude from drivers and management, 9it was only after that meeting that they started posting signs in the bus before the annual meetings – as required by law, as well as other minor law abiding rules).
I strongly feel that people should arrange a considerate fight at (and before) next annual DOT hearing to permit competition on this route for the benefit of all travelers, and then we can go forward with a motion to close the "hitch platz". You can not entitle people to be manipulated as is the situation now!
I am awaiting feedback, and if possible we can arrange a special forum (or blog) to take care of this situation.

Now I get it!
He went to the Hitch Plotz to get hitched!
