The hypocrisy of anti-Kiryas Joel magazine article being defended by professional women

There are many issues that plague the Chasidishe community today in general, and Kiryas Yoel in particular. Children leaving the fold because they are not being accepted, loved and understood is one of the major deficits with a community that will not accept change. Parents and educators must, and will more sooner then later, realize that there are too many people out there that are ready to accept their precious children just the way they are, if they are not willing to.

However, the greatest hypocrisy is when a group of people from the outside come to Kiryas Yoel's defense. These are people who have not been born or bred in Kiryas Yoel and have never experienced any of the trials and tribulations common to the children of Kiryas Yoel. Even more so, the women that have come to the rescue of Kiryas Yoel's honor, not only are they not of the Chasidic persuasion, but they are professionals with higher education degrees, which is unheard of in Kiryas Yoel and still very uncommon even for Chasidim in general.

The fact that these professional women have taken matters into their own hands to defend Kiryas Yoel's honor without any official post to do so, is as insulting as the magazine article with Gitty Grunwald. Kiryas Yoel has always been a private and insular community with no interest of outside attention or proselytizing.

The fact is Kiryas Yoel will seem eccentric to outsiders no matter what. A thousand positive spin articles will not change peoples' minds that Kiryas Yoel is a village filled with extremist Chasidic relics. The best that such a community can do is to live their lives the way they like and ignore any negative outside attention. Bringing in the press, the way these outsider women have, only serves to weaken the community and open it up to even more ridicule.

Comments:
What is your problem?

Tell the Spinka rebbe to get only Spinka lawyers to defend him.

Yeah, right.

The funniest thing about this article is that the ONE person actually FROM Kiryas Joel had to give a fake name to protect her identity. All the while she is trying to make it seem as though things are normal there. If they are so normal why does she have to HIDE HER NAME?? lol

100% right on the money.

FROM WHAT I WAS TOLD THERE ARE ABOUT 300 GIRLS GETTING MARRIED EACH YEAR AND STAY LIVING IN K.J.
HOW COME THERE ARE SO FEW RUNAWAY KIDS?
APPARENTLY THESE GIRLS ARE VERY HAPPY WITH THEIR WAY OF LIFE.
WHY BUD INTO K.J. LIFESTYLES IF THE WOMEN ARE HAPPY?

The leadership of Kiryas Joel (and, for that matter, New Square, etc.) want to maintain their insularity from the outside world.

That is their prerogative, and if they are able to do so, that's super.

But when they start to court the secular politicians, and when their people burden the taxpayers of New York on account of their deficient practical educations and criminal acts, then the public has the right to demand of KJ, etc., the same degree of transparency that any other community has.

>Bringing in the press, the way these outsider women have, only serves to weaken the community and open it up to even more ridicule<

This community is a disfunctional caricature of traditional yiddishkeit.
It deserves all the ridicule it gets.

How do you know how happy they are? Do you think Gitty is happier now? She was not awarded custody of her kid, because she is on drugs and booze.
Its a facr Hassidic women in general are very happy with their lifestyle. They wouldn't trade places with women in the secular world.
I am a woman in K.J. and am pretty open minded. For us this is the ideal life. Most women in the outside would trade places with us!

who cares how happy she is, we all have problems the bottom line is we have to handle These situations better

7/27/08 11:44PM Hit the nail on the head . This is the difference between Chassidus in the old Shtetl in Europe and here in the USA. It is imploding from within & shayn zeht men ois that these unrepresentative nekayvos are the Chassidestes. They would be shunned in KJ.

What do you mean "an official post"?

Did Gitty have an "official post"?

They defended the basis of Yiddishkeit. It has nothing to do with KJ.

i am chasidish guy ...live in williamsburg (not raised here) i can tell u all i am not happy...i am only stuck cuz of my kids...yes i am happy married (to an extend) but got no choice.....i am sure most of kj is not happy they just got no choice....

i love being jewish and frum cuz i have answers to my questions im allowed to ask and too question and it only makes life better i think that if ppl were more open minded to children and didnt put them in a dark box and say this is life no questions then things would be a lot different

I live in Williamsburg cuz that's where I grew up & I'm used to it. I actually don't fit in mamish like a glove - I'm more openminded & am limited for example I can't wear black tights cuz it's too modern in this place...
Yeah sounds silly but it's just an example.

I would love to leave my hometown willi, but #1- My husband & I have jobs..
#2- where should we go?
My husband's family live in Israel, & I don't have family other than in Willi, & the only place my husband would consider is Monsey but I don't like it..
So I'm stuck!!
