Fire in Kiryas Joel destroys synagogue, residence

A fire on Thursday in this Hasidic Jewish village in Orange County destroyed a building that housed a synagogue and two families.

Kiryas Joel Fire Chief Joshua Blumenthal said nobody was injured in the blaze, which started between 1:30 and 2 p.m. He said firefighters from eight companies were called in, but the building was gutted and will be demolished.

The building was 60 by 150, with two stories in front and three in the back.

Blumenthal said the synagogue could hold between 30 and 50 people.
The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Kiryas Joel resident Yitz Farkas said the fact that nobody was hurt was "the most important thing."
