Rabbi Bursztyn officially charged with assault on police officer
A rabbi was formally charged Tuesday with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and obstructing justice, the result of a confrontation after a traffic stop Sunday night.
Rabbi Yosef Bursztyn's arrest touched off demonstrations by large crowds of Orthodox Jewish residents outside police headquarters on Sunday and Monday nights.
Bursztyn, 62, who is dean of a Jewish high school, was processed and released Tuesday, said police spokesman Capt. Robert Lawson.
Bursztyn complained that he was mistreated by the officer, Erik Menck, 30, and an internal affairs inquiry has been launched, Lawson said.
Police said the incident happened at about 10 p.m. Sunday after Menck pulled over a woman to issue a warning for tailgating. The woman was Bursztyn's niece.
The rabbi, who was driving by, recognized his niece and pulled over to see what was going on. Menck warned Bursztyn not to interfere, words were exchanged and a struggle ensued as Menck handcuffed Bursztyn, police said.

I do not know about you guys but in my state you never argue with a cop, you will get arrested in a second and if you touch a cop you will get shot.
Anyhow, did the rabbi really think that he would change the mind of the cop and make him throw away the complain ? very unlikely.

erik menck was a buchor in the mesivta several years ago it was just payback for the livishe mistreatment of an innocent kid.
Re: Anonymous #2: No proof it was a "Jew helping another Jew" - it was his niece. Would he have necessarily stopped for any other? In America everyone whines - when the police stop you or ticket you they're either anti-semitic, anti-black, anti-Spanish or anti-whatever. You should be happy the police are stopping bad drivers - whoever they are - or one day, chas v'sholom, you or your family could be a victim of one of these drivers.
Thr rabbi got what he deserved! Any moron that reaches into an officers car and grabs his shirt deserves to be arrested, rabbi or not! He does not deserve any special privledges because he is the rabbi. I think Erik Menck did the right thing and should be honored for it. As a matter of fact, the only thing I think he did wrong was not giving the rabbi's niece a ticket. She was tailgating, she deserved a ticket. Why is this such an uproar anyway, had it been any other person that Officer Menck arrested this would be no big deal. Menck treated him like any other civilian, after all that is what he is! Good work Lakewood PD
Just an added note, cutting organs out of people's bodies after they die, save children that are dying! Why do you need your organs after your dead, it's kind of selfish to keep them when they can potentially save peoples lives. Have you ever thought of that? Maybe you will when it's your kid!
"Some people live an antire lifetime and wonder if they have made a difference in the world. Police Officers don't have that problem"
I just wanted to express my thanks to everyone that is supporting me and my fellow officers in doing what is right. It is overwhelming to see the diverse support that we are receiving. It is Not always easy doing what is right but it makes it easer when you receive the support that we are receiving.

What is a shame about all of this is that people have forgotten that police officers should be treated with respect. Had the Rabbi just done what Officer Menck asked none of this would be in the news. Treat an officer with respect and you will get the same back. People are making this into a Jew or non Jew thing....it is not.
all u people out there have to learn to stand up foryourself and each other.just because the media loves portrayig jews in a bad light doesnt mean we have to do that to ourslves.rabbi bursztyn would never hit or assault an officer and if you see him you would know that by looking at his face.ericmenck just wants to save his hide.he is just a brutalpolice officer who are hot tempered and abuse their authority.dont be embarresed to say it like it is.i hope menck gets punished
news update!
so called police officer menck
is now accused of beating up an unarmed women in her own home
no rabbi this tiome but a black women
at this juncture the lakewood police dept should take a deeper look at the behavior of this particular officer who seems to have a history of brutality and force when unnessisary
