Contractor killed
by falling wall
A contractor trying to demolish a retaining wall by himself was crushed to death late Thanksgiving night in Brooklyn, police said yesterday.
Frederick Lopez, 33, called a friend about 4 p.m. Thursday to say he was tearing down the wall of a garage on E. 32nd St. in Midwood and would need help carting off the debris.
"If I get the wall down, we can pick it up tomorrow," Lopez told the friend, according to a police source.
But neighbors remembered hearing a large thud that night, and the friend found Lopez dead and buried in debris about 3p.m. yesterday. The victim's address was not immediately released.
"This poor guy was working here alone. The guy shouldn't have been working by himself," said neighbor John Christman, 38. "I feel bad for him, laying there all night."
Neighbors said they never suspected that the sound they heard was something so tragic.
"We heard a loud bang last night. It wasn't anything that made me check, but it was loud enough that we heard it," said a woman who lives next-door.
