Rabbonim urge jewelers to drop charges against Heimishe thief

The same Rabbonim that had given a heter for jewelry stores to press charges against the Heimishe jewelry thief that had stolen thousands from them, have now taken back their p'sak after he had given himself up. The Rabbonim have left the store owners to suffer the loss on their own, ignoring any plea of loss on their behalf. Their cowardly, and halachically incorrect, p'sak will definitely leave the thief with an open door to steal more and cause other honest frum people to lose their hard earned money in the future. When asked by Police why he turned himself in, the Heimishe thief answered, "They'll drop the charges anyway, so why not." Unfortunately he was right.

A friend of mine with the Shomrim told me that a couple of years ago, a Jewish swindler (don't know if this is the same guy as this jewelry thief) who had already victimized many frum communities, conned a Lakewood family out of many thousands of dollars. With the approval of local rabbis, who deemed this man a menace, they went to the police and he was caught. Then, a well-meaning, but clearly misguided busybody got involved, after the con-man cried to him that he was just an innocent victim and begged him to advocate for him on the grounds of pidyon sh'vuim (the obligation to ransom captives).

Despite the fact that local rabbonim had endorsed bringing the authorities into the case, the busybody, a man of some influence, started stirring up trouble for the swindler's victims, proclaiming that "no Jew must ever be allowed to sit in jail," demanding that they drop the charges, publicly denouncing them as "informers" and even trying to set up a bais din to issue a p'sak against them as "informers" to further blacken their reputation in the community. I believe that despite all of this man's harassment and other narishkeit, the victims stuck with the case anyway and the swindler was convicted and jailed, though I don't know for how long.
