Touro College big says grade-fix scam just 'test'
An ex-Touro College official accused of pocketing bribes in a cash-for-grades scheme says he was "just testing the system" when he allegedly altered computerized student records.
Andrique Baron, who pleaded not guilty yesterday to taking bribes and falsifying business records, told detectives after his arrest that he was merely experimenting on the computer and not altering grades.
"My job doesn't call for changing grades," Baron said. "I would have no reason to change grades."
Baron, who was Touro's admissions director for 13 years, was among 10 people charged last month in a scam that allegedly put everything from grades to diplomas up for sale at the college. His statements to police were made public during his arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court.
"I made changes to records," Baron told police. "But they were not live, they were tests, to test and research the system."
Three city teachers were also arrested for allegedly buying Touro master's degrees that they thought could secure them permanent jobs as special education teachers.
