Response from the Frum kilt guy Eliyahu McLean

I'm the guy in the picture...I live a shomer Shabbos life in Yerushalayim. Mother is Jewish, but on my fathers side have Scottish roots, from the McLean clan, so wore a kilt for the Clan Maclean Reunion on the Island of Mull in Scotland...why not? There's even a Jewish kilt maker in Edinburgh who makes shatnes free tartan for the kilts...
Wear the Jewish tribal garb every other day of the year...Jews come in every stripe...kibbutz galuyot.

Eliyahu

Kol HaKavod!

It may come as a shock to some that there are Jews outside of Borough Park.

Sad to say, the only thing most people here have heard about Scotland is that they make good whiskey there.

Take a look at http://www.jewishtartan.com/

I was impressed to see it....there are plenty of yidden who travel to other countries or even places in our own country i.e. Disneyworld and wear things they dont normally wear....(I live in Orlando and see it ALL the time...yes Chasidim with the mickey mouse hats and long payos)Where you were this was an approprite thing for a man to wear...It's not a big deal, people just want something or someone to talk about

and he is wearing veise zocken!

a zisze yid

There are actually several frum families with a link to Clan McClean, living in Yerushalayim, probably more than any other Scottish family, either through giyyur or like Eliyahu, where the mother is Jewish. There was some talk about setting up a Jerusalem branch of the McCleans.
After all, everyone knows the Scots are descendants of the ten lost tribes, which is why they fight amongst themselves so much :)

The so called traditional Chassisshe garb was actually taken from the clothing of the nobility or upper class at the time.

Reb Sholom Schachne the son of the Malach and Father of the Heilige Rizine started dressing in the latest style of his time followed by his son. This sincluded the long white socks and knickers. The nobility of the time wore that. See pictures of that periiod (George Washington)

The traditional frock, kapota or dirtuk as it is called was first worn by Prince Albert, husband of Queen Victoria and called after him.

The lithuanian/russian sector picked this up at the time.

The small crown wide brim fur hats worn by yerushalmis are actually worn by galochim in Italy.

For some reason they stopped picking up the latest styles but in their times it started from the latest style.
