Overheard... at a childrens' shoe store in Boro-Park

A woman with a couple of children walks into a Boro-Park shoe store. She sits her three-year-old child down and has him fitted for shoes by the non-Jewish worker in the store. The worker brings her out one pair of shoes after another. After trying and inspecting many pairs, the woman is down to two pairs that she likes, but she cannot decide which one to buy. The woman takes out her phone talks to someone for about half a minute and hangs up. The woman then tells the worker to put both pairs aside for her because her mother will soon come down to the store to look at them and help her decide which pair to buy. The woman then packs up her kids and leaves the store. The non-Jewish workers says to himself, "I wouldn't have believed if I didn't hear it myself."

Comments:
What's so hard to believe? When shoes cost $85 a pair for a child that will outgrow it within 3 months, it's considered a major purchase. Don't you consult other people before you make a major purchase?
(You can bet that the worker in the store doesn't buy his shoes there!)

$85.00 for children's shoes? What are these -- certified shatnez free and guaranteed not to have been constructed from a parah aduma?

You can find many good children's shoes in K-mart for under $35.00. Why shop in Boro Park ?

I hope there weren't a lot of other people there waiting their turns, because I know from experience that it takes a long time to outfit one's kids with shoes. Anyway the worker gets paid for his time, the woman has time to waste, as long as the kids weren't kvetchy and whiny "azoi geit dos". It's not easy to make a living,

Do what I do, Shop anywhere but in boro park or flatbush (except bergament). Go to kohls, walmart, kmart, century, marshalls, costco... Also check out amazon.com or endless.com usually they have good deals. There is never a problem with returns, and the price is almost always less expensive. I fyour too lazy to look around than you deserve to get ripped off.

The point which apparently a lot of people have missed, is that this woman may be old enough to get married and have a child but is clearly so immature she can't even buy a pair of shoes for her child without Mommy's help.

If the kid is 3, it's most probably not the kid's first pair of shoes...So it IS weird that she is consulting her mother for such a minor thing...

BTW if you read the article it doesn't mention anything about price it all had to do with style

This is the beauty of Klal Yisroel. No matter how old we get, our mothers are still extremely important to us. We respect them to the utmost and may it always be that way untill they reach ad meah vesrim shona

Folks, sometimes a Bubbie or Zeidi want to buy their Einikl a pair of shoes.
It is a really beautiful and RESPECTFUL thing for the young mother to ask the clerk to put her top two choices aside so her mother or mother-in-law can choose.

This way, SHE chose among all the shoes in the store her two best choices, while still giving the mother or shvigger the RESPECT of letter her feel she chose.

To me this is a really nice thing, not something to be made fun of.

Also, it is easier on the clerk than having the bubbie there with the child. (smile)

Also, it's possible she doesn't pay for shoes and Mommy does, so Mommy will pick out the one she likes. Wow, that's independence.

Everyone here got fooled. What really happened is the lady, like a typical boro parker, went to a store to "try out" shoes.....

Once the lady knew what she needed for her kids she called her mother as a ploy then went to purchase the shoes online.

Many people do this and it's disgusting and outright genaivas daas.

Only in Broo park can this happen. Boro park is a disgrace and this si why people hate the place. between the attitudes, ganavim and double parkers you can go meshugah!

to the above commentator. Ganavim eh,not everyone or every store. But they do rip you off.But everything else you mentioned,i couldnt agree with you more. Its a sick place to drive in,that's un questioned.

WAKE UP GUYS my kids do this all the time, because when my wife gets there we end up paying for it!!!

This is done all the time. It is giving kovod to parents who WANT the enjoyment of buying their grand children's shoes, especially a first pair, or the one which will be worn to cheder on his/her first day.

If one of my kids did not allow me this small pleasure, it would hurt me.

So, what this woman did WAS indenpendent. SHE chose the shoes she liked best, and then allowed her mother or shvig to choose from the ones SHE already approved of. Making both mother and grandmother happy.

What in world is wrong with that?

peoples all she wanted was her moms money, nothing else.

As we know, Vemen hut de Mayah, Hut de Dayah...whoever pays, gets their say! So she did the right thing, I did the same..whats the big deal...

If everyone would be this madakdik in the gemara instead of a blog, the world would be alot better.

Ppl, what happened to being Dan lekaf zechus?

GET A LIFE!

if the big deal here is a goyishe worker, stores in bp or anywhere whos main clientele is the frum crowd, only hire frum workers who will understand the frum mentality.
my first thought, too, was that mom was paying for the shoes and there is nothing wrong with her choosing.

just a thoght...completetly off topic...
if the store is charging $85 for a pair off shoes (which they are..)

why are they employing non jewish workers??????
are they so greedy to sve a few dollars????

there are plenty of yidden who are unemployed and desperate for jobs so they can feed their family!!!

owners- buy yourselves some zechisim and hire your fellow brothers for the jobs...even if it may cost a little more.. teh reward is priceless!!

I have found on many occasions that the shoes in Boro Park stores are cheaper than the same shoe online. So for all those who are busy with Boro Park being a ripoff, you are welcome to buy elsewhere, but they are far from a ripoff.

I get this story. I work retail and see this all the time! These women have to grow up and start making these choises on their own!!! Stop calling Mommy to find out what color shirt to buy!!!!!!!!!

Unless you grew up this way, you don't understand that you have respect for your mother and her sense of taste. It is not that you are counting on your mother to buy the shoes for her grandchild. It is that you don't have such a big ego that you see it as some sort of weakness to go to her for advice. Who do we really have, in the end, but our closest relatives when the chips are down? One of the ways I show my mother love is by involving her in even some small decisions.

On the other hand, I do understand that if I were the clerk, I would much prefer having a man come in, ask for a pair of shoes in a price range, and leave the store in 10 minutes with a purchase.
