Councilman pushing legal double parking

A Brooklyn city councilman is suggesting that motorists be allowed to double park for five minutes - so they can run that quick errand at the neighborhood store.

Councilman Vincent Gentile says traffic agents are "out of control" costing people hundreds of dollars for running simple errands.

Gentile says one of his constituents was given a 115 dollar ticket for double parking while he was waiting for another motorist to pull out of a parking spot.

The bill doesn't seem to have much of a chance. The chairman of the city council transportation committee, John Lui, says the city is not going to make it easier to double park.

A hearing on the bill is scheduled for next month.

This has to be the stupidest idea yet.

absoluteley gevaldig idea!!!also, can some streets have "thru" street like manhattan??

is the traffic agent supposed to stand there with a stop watch?

Since the traffic agent isn't going to stand around, it means that in practice, people will double-park as long as they think it will take for the traffic agent to come around again. And if they get a ticket, they will insist that they double-parked for five minutes, went away, and came back for a second five minutes.

The lack of parking really becomes an issue when you gotta go to the bathroom really bad and can't find anywhere to leave your car for a minute! I was once in Manhattan with my family and hard as I tried - I couldn't find anywhere to leave my car - even the Parking Businesses were full to capacity - I had no choice but to double-park leaving everyone in the car while I took care of urgent matters - When I came out of the store 3 ½ minutes later - there was a cop writing me a ticket - I tried explaining my situation - that I had no choice... The cop didn't care... I ended up cursing her that she should end up in the same situation I was just in - and not find anywhere at all to park - and then she should just make in her pants! And then I drove off feeling relieved!!
