Jerusalem Gay Parade Ban Reversed
An Israeli court on Sunday ordered the Jerusalem municipality to allow a gay pride parade to take place, reversing a ban last week by the city's mayor.
A judge charged the city of Jerusalem to pay 13,000, with half the amount coming from ultra-Orthodox Jewish Mayor Uri Lupolianski for trying to stop the June 30 event by gay rights group Jerusalem Open House. It also ordered the city to place the rainbow flag, symbol of the homosexual movement, over city hall and along the parade route.
"The harming of the sensitivities of one community or another is not enough to prevent another community from fulfilling its rights to equality, respect and freedom of expression," wrote Jerusalem District Court Judge Musya Arad in his ruling, according to the Associated Press.
Last week, Jerusalem City Hall had announced that it was banning the local, 4th annual Jerusalem Pride: Love Without Borders parade because "it would be provocative and hurt the feelings of the broader public living in and visiting the city."
After the ruling, a statement by a city spokesperson said that "the city's administration did not intend to attack the freedom of expression of one group or another, as argued, but feared that the event would inflame tensions and hurt the delicate ties (among various groups) in the city."
The parade's route goes past areas where many residents are orthodox Jews, who regard homosexuality as an abomination. The mayor had also cited safety concerns about public disorder were the event to take place. About 4,000 people attended last year.
Director of Open House, Hagai El-Ad said that the court decision "is a victory not just for the lesbian and gay community in Jerusalem, but a triumph for freedom of speech," according to AP.
Three months ago, Christian, Jewish and Muslim leaders united in an attempt to block a the international World Pride 2005 gay festival from taking place. Recently, organizers had decided to postpone the parade until 2006 because the event dates coincided withdrawal of Israelis from the Gaza Strip in August.

There are many Yidden - including frum yidden- in Boro Park and many other neighborhoods - who suffer from "same-sex attraction". It is a nisoyon to be oiver gilui arayos like any other. The difference is that a frum yid works to overcome this nisoyon - he does not proclaim it as good and right. None of us really know from what nisoyon our friends suffer and where their Yetzer horo is strongest - we need to be mispalel that those who are "bo l'taher" will receive siyato dishmayo.

say what you want about israelis and zionists, but dont bash someone because of his levush. The reason why in chutz la'aretz we make sure to wear different clothes is so that we should noy assimilate, but in Israel where every one is Jewish this reason does not aply (xcept for yarmulke and tzitzis). Never judge a book by its cover! I personally know more than a few frum israelis who you would never think in your wildest dreams that they are frum. and you know what, theyre a million times more frum than anyone you could pull out of NY. One of them, an 18 year old, knows gantz shas ball peh! and he wears a knit yarmulke! So dont go around saying that people who wear knit yarmulkes or any yarmulke different than yours, a shaigets. Its extremely close minded!
Also, you can be an anti-tzioni (likeI am) and not wish death and destruction upon your fellow Yidden. And lets face it, Just because someone is a tzioni that does not make him a bad Jew (as long as he is frum of course). Without minimizing the seriousness of the aveirah - take a reality check! Is your dislike of machlokes (for which Korach v'adoso fell into the Gehinom)and loshon horo (for which one will never see p'nei ha'shchina)equal to your dislike of gays - if not, I suspect most of these latest postings about Aids, gays, WWII, etc. are motivated by dislike of gays and only incidently supported by the Torah's disapproval. Being human means that we elevate ourselves above our animalistic instinct. Just because you have a sexual desire to be with the same sex partner doesn't make it right. People have desires to steal, kill, etc, does that make it right. If god made me want to kill, then I should be allowed to because why else would he make me.
