Chasidishe woman arrested for 'stealing' pocket book
A Chasidishe woman was arrested in a sting operation by the NYPD at the Atlantic Street train station for 'stealing' a pocket book. The pocket book was intentionally left by the NYPD as part of a sting operation to collar criminals that would take the pocket book instead of returning it to the Transit Authority. In New York City items found in the subway must be turned in to the Transit Authority. The woman took the pocket book and began to walk off. Within moments she was jumped by a half dozen Police Officers and was handcuffed and taken away before even being asked what her intentions were.
In another such a case where a 21 year old male was arrested in such a sting operation a Judge dismissed the charges on the grounds of entrapment.

And what if she could find no name inside - is she not Halachikly allowed to keep it? Is it not an avaidah?
And if instead of a "Chasidishe" woman or a "Heimishe" woman (as she was referred to on another blog that reported this story), if the woman who found the purse and began walking off with it had only been a secular "shaygetz" Jewess, or even a "shiksa" or a "schvartze," would you be so quick to assume that her motives were benign and innocent instead of this being a case of presumed g'neva? And in the latter case, if some black "reverend" like Herbert Daughtry, Wyatt Tee Walker or even Fats Sharpton himself or some other "community leader" had gotten her quickly sprung from jail, would you be complaining that "the 'schvartzes' get away with everything?"
I don't care what her intentions where. If it's a crime, it's a stupid law that needs to be changed. If I find a wallet in the street I am allowed to keep it but not in the subway. Besides, how can the cops prove what my intent was? It's a stupid law.
