Rabbi Fakes His Way Out Of Sitting In Traffic Like Rest Of Us

You see it all over the city, an unmarked car with emergency lights flashing trying to make it through traffic. But have you ever wondered while you're sitting in gridlock what the emergency was?

A natural thought from drivers who on any given day deal with some of the worst traffic in the country -- average commute time 90 minutes -- is "this guy must be headed to a serious emergency."

Or is he?

CBS 2 caught up to one such unmarked car in a heck of a hurry.

Scott Weinberger: "Can you tell me what emergency your are responding to?

Man: "Excuse me?"

Scott Weinberger: "What emergency are you responding to?"

The man's name is Isaac Heschel. His official looking black Crown Victoria is his personal car. However, the lights and sirens he admits he paid someone to install.

Heschel is a rabbi who volunteers his time as a chaplain to the MTA and Port Authority Police, but both agencies said he has no right to have emergency lights, or drive like this.

Scott Weinberger: "Why do you have lights and sirens in your car?"

Heschel: "There are reasons for that sir."

We first learned of Rabbi Heschel's unusual driving habits from a home video sent to CBS 2 by a member of law enforcement who wants to remain anonymous. Sent with the tape was a note that claimed Heschel was putting pedestrians and other drivers in danger.

We had to see for ourselves. So, on the ground and in the air we followed Heschel for days, and what we found was stunning.

At crosswalks he used lights to move pedestrians along. And if traffic gets too bad he drives the wrong way up a street.

Remember, he is not a cop. He is not going to an emergency.

Heschel is actually a 47th Street diamond dealer with some multifaceted perks. Not only does he get to take the fast lane to work, a sweet free parking spot was always waiting for him. Heschel avoided tickets by using a special parking placards.

Scott Weinberger: "Why don't you use the same placard everyday?"

Heschel: "It's a matter, uh ... there's reasons for it."

Scott Weinberger: "Can you tell me what they are?"

Heschel: "It depends what I'm doing that day."

It was on the way to the Diamond District that day we saw Heschel’s official looking car use the HOV lane to avoid a major traffic jam on the Prospect Expressway.

When lights and sirens aren't enough, not even a tie up at the Lincoln Tunnel stops our reckless rabbi. The lights flash; he gets out and actually moves several traffic cones, and then drives past a Port Authority Police checkpoint without ever being challenged.

Scott Weinberger: "What was the necessity for you to use your lights, to remove cones, to go through a closed entrance of the Lincoln Tunnel?"

Heschel: "Sir, I don't think what I do I need to discuss with you."

While Heschel seemed unconcerned, others were.

"It goes to show us that that we have some vulnerabilities from people who pretend to be official emergency vehicles," former FBI agent William Daly said. "They could be used to transport explosive devices."

Once Heschel realized what our cameras had captured he changed his tune and said he was sorry.

"We all make mistakes and when I make a mistake I apologize, and that's basically what I'm saying to you," Heschel said.

Because of his use of lights and sirens, both the MTA and Port Authority Police told CBS 2 they have decided to part ways with Rabbi Heschel.

"EACH DOG HAS HIS DAY" I don't know him neither am I happpy what happend to him ,I actually feel bad for him I'm sure he helps pepole. I can't forget how a few years ago on purim Mr. Heschel spotted a shvizers car driving with lights & sirens on PURIM he blocked them in and nebech called police on them didn't let them leave until police arrived. I don't do gods chasbonis but look what happend on TV followed by Air By foot and vehcile.

Tiere Yiden- Why do we have to give others extra reasons to be antisemitic? It's not worth it. People watching the video clip have now been inducted to the "hall of Nazi wannabes". All because of this wiseguy and many others.

It's not right to abuse priveleges and it causes a chillul Hashem.

It's people like this who are responsible for police stopping Hatzalah on calls!

As a longtime member of hatzalah, I would like to put in my 2 cents. There is no disputing the facts that someone who abuses lights and sirens is doing a devastating disservice to Hatzoloh and to Klal Yisroel. That said, Do we have to go so far as saying "throw him in jail?" I am sure that the incident would not be repeated, and if it is repeated he should face the consquenses. Every person has made some mistake in his life; does that mean his life of Chesed should end now because of an inmature mistake? I am sure that the people who are seeking his blood are jealous of the fact that he does all this Chesed, and therefore gets some sort of Kovod. Maybe they are even hurt that they could not join an organization, so they want to stir the pot.

is he a litvak or a chussid?

Some dogs don't have their day!

Rabbi Shraga Feivel Mendlowitz ZT"L said "Where there is chillul Hashem, we do not impart honor to a rabbi......"

lets not id ourselves nobody can say they are in ASKONUS 100% lshem shmyim..

Hershel has been doing toivas and was a tremendous askan for Klal Yisrael- he is there when you need him and was a good liasion - I am sure some will disagree and say he has attitude and so on.
It is a pity that when people get well connected they start abusing their priviliges . (Look what happened to Chaim Rubin in Lakewood).

Let this be a lesson for those that have the power and clout that dont take advantage of your priviliges

how is he any diff than shomrim playing cops and robbers

Hmm.. Lets see...

We should try to be in his shoes? What shoes would that be? Yes, people make mistakes, but there doesn't seem to be an excuse for this guy to do something like this on a regular basis. He shouldn't even have L+S in car to begin with, being PAPD and MTA chaplain doesn't get you that privlage. The parking yes, the driving like a nut, no.

He's a Askun for Klal Yisrael? Not today. Today he is Busha plain and simple. So yes, much of the good he has done for friends and community gets undone when he does something like this.

Remember, what they taught us in kindergarten, on Rosh Hashana HKB'H looks at our scale.. even if one did loads of good all year.. if he/she did more bad.. the scales tips the wrong way.

I'm sure he's a nice guy.. but always remeber, the yarmulka, beard, hat, jacket.. all say something.. once we've got it on, we're looked at a higher standard -- rightly or wrongly -- like it or not.

To the commentor about Shomrim, care to explain what you mean. How do they play cops and robbers??

Jack,

The difference is he is not a cop. Cops put their life on the line evry day for little pay - they aren't playing a game.

Good they exposed this guy.All the Buffs have to be exposed.Nobody cares about the poor Kollel man in the 1990 Chevy Caprice wagon who is stuck in traffic, he doesnt have lights and sirens-did you ever think that these Buffs scare a ordinary Yid because they think that they are getting stopped

Satmar ruv Z"l said (Rabbi) REBBE
stands for Rosh Bnei Yisroel or as in this case "RA BE"EINEI HASHEM"
He's not the only "JACKASS" abusing his Hatzolo lights. Those SCHMUCKS does MORE BAD than good.

the story is funny. no one but a rabid anti-semite will see this as anything but a tale of brazen abuse of the system by one man-child.

itchy has been behaving this way since childhood. clearly hasn't grown up. the lengths cbs went to bust him are amazing.

bottom line; a great story and great entertainment. way to go cbs!

To the poster who said that cops do the same thing:

That may be true, but a Rabbi is held to higher standards to a cop, and even a yid in general, as his actions can lead to a chillul Hashem, while a cop's does not.

Who cares if he is chasseedish or a litvak? will it make a difference? Let me bet that if he actually was chasseedish, you would automaticly assume he is shmuck. Sorry man, this is a no-go. If any one is worried about a Chillul Hashem, it would be about jews discrimination against other jews, not some joe shmoe who made a mistake- get a life ( and a loving one at that!) all of you.

This Rabbi is a total disgrace to all the REAL rabbis out there.
Kodos to the MTA for removing him from his position.
He is considered a RODEF when he speeds down a buisy street with sirens when its not an emergency

Itchy,

1- Thanks for not involving Hatzolah in this mess.

2- All of those you stepped upon on your way up, will be waiting for you on your way down.

To the B Coordinators

You better stop the other system abusers before somebody tips off CBS about them.

BEWARE - the community will not tolerate this abuse no more.

If you are an Hatzolah member, you carry a even bigger responsibility to act like "mentchen".

Look at all those hatzolah members with cop lookalike wanna be cars ! some of them drive like animals .They should kick out those members who have police lookalike cars .what a chillul hashem !

To anon 9:56

You are right!

HOWEVER, you should take this into account; CBS claims that they have gotten this tape from a law enforcement source who "claims" that this might endanger the lives of innocent people. They also claim that they have been following Mr (not RABBI) Heschel for "DAYS".

a) Which law enforcement officer in his or her right frame of mind would not take this matter into his own hands? Since when does Law Enforcement go to the press in order to save lives???

Case in point, somebody was out to get revenge, and he struck pay dirt, using CBS as his piñata.

b) Does CBS have nothing else to do with their resources other than follow some idiot moron (who, make no mistake, deserved what came to him) by a full news crew with a van and a chopper?
Is this the scope of the century, catching a Jew abusing his privileges?

Had he not been a so-called "Rabbi" would they have still followed him around for "days"???

I can tip off Mr. Weinberger on more than one non-Rabbi-Jew who abuses his lights and siren and official placards. Will Mr. Weinberger follow him with the same zeal?

I know the answer.

Actually it is right in-line with CBS news. most frum people don't watch the evening news so maybe you are not familiar with what they put on.
This is what they call investigative news. It is not uncommon on CBS or most other news programs.
The claims of anti-semitism sound even more rediculous when you realize how many people have been investigated by the news, and how few are jews.
I can't remember an investigative report about a frum jew.
So with thounsands of reports, and one of them about a frum guy you claim anti-semitism.
You need to find a new excuse!!

whether or not there was revenge involved he still deserves to be reprimanded. This is considered Redifa. anyone speeding in a non emergency situation is a a Rodef Meedoraysa

Not everyone with special privileges will abuse them. My wife and I have a handicapped daughter and we only use the permit when she is in the car or we are going to pick her up. We would rather get a $65 ticket for an expired meter than abuse the permit.

Now that's impressive!

Ask anyone, they've seen abuse of lights and sirens by people who do not even know how to perform CPR. Not to mention those who are in fact certifed EMTs and abuse these devises when there is a traffic backup.

Yes, CBS' investigation is racially motivated - but at the same time, we as a tzibbur need something to scare the other abusers from doing the same.

People's lives are at stake, pedestrians, fellow drivers, etc. Not to mention the hatzolah member who gets pulled over on the way to a call because the police are on alert because of the 'buffs'.

Unfortunately, rabbanim can do little about this matter, because those in question obviously have little respect or interest in their guidance.

We must rely (unfortunately) on people like CBS to fix these problems before more lives are lost and bigger chilulei hashem are performed.

This is what someone who claims to be a Heimisher Yid writes:

"We must rely (unfortunately) on people like CBS to fix these problems before more lives are lost and bigger chilulei hashem are performed."

If Chilul hashem concerns you so much, what about the big chilul hashem that was caused by the CBS airing this story for Millions of Goyim? and who is responsible for this? this so called law inforcement agent who went and got CBS involved! this "Shaigetz" who did this made a much bigger Chilul Hashem!

Anon of December 04, 2006 4:24 PM:

Shmeckel.....if this guy wasn't doing anything illegal and driving safely and abiding the laws like most people....do you think CBS would be following him around? They didn't follow me....will they be following you around anytime soon?? Use your brains once in a while!

CBS is should have their aviation license revoked.

CBS is nit authorized to endanger the sky flying recklessly to follow and idiot driver.

That is the job of Police and when CBS violated their flying license they deserve to have it revoked by the FAA.

CBS should be reported to FAA for reckless flying and violating the terms of their flying privileges.

If anyone wants to catch drivers who violate traffic law recklessly, you need to look no further than each and every NYC cop.

Every single cop without exception violates traffic law ILLEGALLY 1000 per day - WITH NO EMERGENCY - when they cross red lights without any emergency and then they user sirens to get to eat their LUNCH or COFFEE Break quicker.

Cops violate more Red lights than anyone else for one reason and for one reason only:

Because no cop, will give another cop, a ticket, ever! It never happened yet, ever that a cop should be ticketed by another cop!

To the so called "FBI agent":

Any terrorist who wants to bomb the tunnels needs only to become a REAL COP and then he can violate every law with impunity and he can then bomb whatever he wants unchecked because no cop questions any other cop and lets them violate as many laws as they want.
