BEWARE - Penalties now being issued to Frum Jury Duty dodgers

According to an inside source, there is now an extra effort being made to penalize and fine Frum people that try to get away from attending Jury Duty. According to the source, the cause of this problem is that a woman that has worked for an anti-Semitic Judge for many years has now been moved to the Jury part. The woman has a personal vendetta against Frum people and claims that she is aware of all their shenanigans and won't let them get away with it anymore. If you receive a Jury Duty summons either attend at the set time or send it back with an excuse, ignoring it will now result in a first-time $250 fine and second-time $1000 fine.

Comments:
It's easy to tar someone as an anti-semite if you don't agree with them. Have you anything to say about the frum people who simply think they're above the law and ignore jury summonses?

how about going to jury duty like you're supposed to do then when a verdict comes out the way you don't want it to you can't complain. So you're saying for all of this time you're people have been getting over and the party is over and you don't like it.

How do they prove you received the summons? Is it sent via certified mail?

They don't have to prove anything. The law says if it was mailed that's sufficient.

As for your inside information, there is no way to track frum jews in the jury duty system. Overall, NYC is cracking down on Jury duty dodgers, and this is not limited to frum people.

Frum people should be doing jury duty, the same way everyone else is. Its time to stop looking for loopholes for everything.

If you don't take part in the system then you can't complain when there is something you don't like. Its that simple every person make a difference in making sure justice is served.

all of you are blown!!! do you know that is much harder for a frum person to take off work to go to jury duty, he doesn't just have a boy and a dog, and maybe a wife!!! and for a jewish woman it's even harder who will cook for the 10 kids????????????? that is why we don't go!!!!!

Exactly, and that is why any Jewish mother can simply state that she is taking care of 5 children and be exempt for years to come. Likewise, even once you show up, it is very easy to get out of serving if you state that you disagree with the penalty being considered, or you have an issue with some laws discussed. Just don't ignore the summons, that is all.

As far as I am concerned, they cannot prove that you received the summons unless they mail it via registered mail. Next, they probably will not go after you as they have approx 600 New Yorkers showing up at any given day to serve and they absolutely do not need more as almost 3 quarters of the people are sent home at the end of the day. And no! Do not say that you disagree with the penalty as some judges are "lehachasnicks" and will make you return the following day or two just for the kicks-of-it! It has happened. Just state something that would make it sound as if you cannot judge fairly and they'll take it from there your chances of getting selected are as I say 1 out of 600 and at the end of the day approx 3:30 pm 1 out of 250-300. So go! And do your duty! - If you would have a case in court would you prefer decent people like you on the jury or rather the old, disabled and homeless?

You can't complain that the jury judging YOUR case was composed of all inner city unemployed residents if you yourself dont show up. If YOU avoid coming, so will I, and so will every Yankel, Shmiel, and every decent John and Joe out there. So, if you don't with a jury full of Leroys and Lakishas, be the Yankel who shows up.

I don't think a frum Yidwould get a jury of his peers - namely all frum yidden like himself, even though that is what one is officially entitled to in our courts.

I love going to jury duty, what can be better than $40 a day.

If you try to evade your jury duty, then don't go whining the next time a Lemrick Nelson walks away free.

How can you expect the prosecutors to give serious regard to cases of crimes against the Frum community if the Frum community doesn't take the justice system seriously?

Mr. Chaptem, this article makes no sense.

How can the court know who is "frum" (and specifically target them as you allege) if they never show up?

I was on jury duty last week and a couple of times over the years before that (Kings county).

Each time it has gotten better.

The conditions have progressively gotten better and now the courthouse is a beautiful, new, large building.

They don't keep you as long as they used to. Some people get discharged after just one day if not chosen (probably most), though I was held over another day.

Toward the end of the second day, I was dismissed and given a paper and told that I would not have to serve again for EIGHT years.

They have wi-fi, so you can bring a computer to use while you wait. Not only that, there is also a computer room with about fifteen desktop computers and internet access that you can use while you are waiting. The browsers do close down every ten minutes but then they start up again.

It still is a hassle, but is much better than it used to be, thanks to the improvements pushed through by chief NYS Judge Kaye and others.

"I love going to jury duty, what can be better than $40 a day."

Does that mean you are otherwise unemployed?$ 40 a day is peanuts,it's not worth losing a days work for.

Is the anonymous idiot suggesting that every African-American is named "Leroy" or "Lakisha," unemployed, and an anti-Semite, unable to fairly judge the case of Jews? The juror pool is drawn from the tax rolls, voter registration lists, vehicle registrations, and utility rolls. Instead of making insinuations about religious animus and stereotypes, we would all be better off if everyone served when he or she was called.

I say here's ur opportunity to finally send them to be hung on the gallows - why pass the chance??

would you like it if they said the same about you? where is your "mitzvah kaf"?
