UPDATE - TODDLER MOWED DOWN BY DRIVER, 84

An 18-month-old Brooklyn boy was killed yesterday by an elderly neighbor driving to a Father's Day party - who didn't notice and kept on going, cops and neighbors said.

Michael Evans was playing under the watchful eye of his doting mother just before 6 p.m. when he wandered near the driveway of an 84-year-old woman on East 26th Street just as she was backing out.

She apparently never realized she'd struck the toddler as she headed to her family's affair.

"All I heard was screaming - terrified, crazy screaming," said a witness.

The boy's mother was the first to see his crushed body.

"I ran to console her. She couldn't talk. Her legs were shaking," said another neighbor on the block in Midwood.

"This is a tragedy. They're lovely people," said another resident. "I came out and saw the father holding him. He was black and blue - his entire body, feet, head, arms."

People on the block agreed that the mother is extremely attentive.

"She is a very good mother," said Jason Goodman, 27. "She always watched him, always kept an eye on the kid."

At Kings County Hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead, Rabbi Avraham Lider said the mother was in a daze.

"When I met with her, she could not remember anything. She said the child just wandered a little bit," he said.

"The father just said to me, 'I wish God took my life instead of my son's.' "

Mayer Berger, a volunteer first responder with Chesed Shel Emes emergency services, said the family was forgiving.

"The baby was on the sidewalk and somebody backed out of the driveway - the kid was in the driveway. They said they had nothing against the woman driver, it's an accident," said Berger.

The funeral is today.

Police don't expect to charge the driver.

Comments:
I think there really MUST be a cutoff age for allowing people to drive. It is just outrageous that these old senile people are allowed to drive. Something has to be done.

Who said anyone was senile, except for people who read one sentence in a story and imagine a whole scenario, that is.

it is ALSO outrageous that YOUNG SENILE people read into an article what was never written, and with some righteous anger, no less. Is that the first symptom of Ales Heimish disease?

The headline for this story is misleading and actually not true. a driver who mows someone down will know that he hit someone. this case was an accident. the driver didnt realize that she hit the child and drove away. she didnt mow anybody down and did not purposely leave. do not try to sensationalize a tragedy to make it sound more interesting. that is terrible.

under the watchful eye of the mother,

you know very well the mother wasn't paying attention

good that her child die. if more chassidiche childreng et killed, maybe then their parents will start looking after them properly.

How sad. The only lesson to be learned here is that in such a densly populated neighborhood, EVERYONE needs to be careful. Parents need to be very watchful over their children, and drivers need to watch out for small children darting in front of a car. If everyone watches out, then maybe future tragedies like this one can be averted.

The comment at 4:35 pm may have been correct about the problem but it is in very poor taste to state that more children should G-d forbid .....
We should realize that the child seemingly was on the sidewalk and, at least for a moment, not being watched. It may not be the fault of the driver and all those that blamed the driver should revoke it unless they were actual witnesses.
