Maimonides Medical Center offers great service - for throwing out patients' family members
A Yingerman was thrown out of the Intensive Care Unit at Maimonides Medical Center by a hoard of security guards on Shabbos. A Yingerman came early Shabbos morning to Maimonides to be with his grandfather who was at the ICU. When the Yingerman got to the hospital he asked the security guard at the front desk if he could go up to his grandfather at the ICU, to which the guard replied yes. The Yingerman proceeded on his way to the ICU. However, as soon as he stepped into the unit a group of nurses began yelling at him telling him to leave and that they were calling security to throw him out. The Yingerman, completely confused by what had taken place, asked in a polite voice to know what was going on. The nurses just continued to shout at him and said that security was already on their way. Within a minute the Yingerman was surrounded by a platoon of security guards who forced him out of the unit, trying to push him into an elevator until he insisted that he would only go with the stairs because it was Shabbos. When the Yingerman asked when he would be allowed to see his grandfather he was told to come back later. The Yingerman waited around to be with his grandfather but was not allowed in until many hours later at 12 pm.

I am sure there is another side to the story. It does not seem likely that the "yingerman" had "no idea" why the nurses asked him to leave.

Years ago the security guard ran after me to kick me out. This happened after i went with my wife to the labor room but was denied entry because she already had one person with her (her coach). This was not even the delivery room just the labor room.

I unfortunatly spent almost a year at MMC with family, and NEVER had a problem with security allowing me in at any hpur of any day. There are times that the nurses would ask me to leave when they do the rounds or something. This guy you are writting about was probably a smart.... and made people crazy, or refused to excuse them when asked. I am no big fan of MMC, but this doesn't sound right!

how about this they kick out the realy sick people when they think they won't make it. they advise you to transfer the sick to a other hospital for some stuped reson so when the person dies it is not on there record
so they have a very low death rate and the best heart center when all they are doing is giving poor service colecting millions and letting people suffer

I’m going every shabbos in Maimonides to give out food for “Yad Ephraim” I never had a problem or heard anyone complaining
I don’t say, the nurses don’t have any feeling to patens and of course to family the er is a zoo I agree I set there with my grand father 2 days till he got a room what went on over there I cant write a real zoo
By night I dint have a chair to sit at all

I was in the ER a few weeks ago at 2AM, and my Very pregnant wife sat down next to me, when a nurse came over and explained that the chairs are for patients only. I tried to reason with her, and she went to call security, and they demanded she stand up!!

it's our fault because we let them get away with everything. there board of trustees has many community people on it and they couldn't care less as long as all beds are filled up who cares about service.
lets try using other community hospitals like Methodist or Lutheran or Long Islang Col. for 3 months and you will see how fast things will change at Maimo.

THE STAFF IN MMC IS CRUEL TO EVERYONE THAT STEPS FOOT THERE- COWORKERS, PATIENTS, VISITORS, ETC.

Maimonides does not have the proper equipment necessary in treating elderly people with various diseases. Their doctors suck.
One can stay in the ER at least 15 hours before being seen by a hospital dr.

People should pick the right MD as a shliach and go to the hospital the MD is at.
My wife had head and neck surgery by a Dr Urken at Beth Israel. The staff was very polite and helpful. I went home for the night and they gave me the nurses station telephone number. I phoned at 6 AM and the RN told me how the night went then apologized for not having more time. The RN helped my wife several times at night getting out of bed. This is not the norm for a Hospital, they were great.

Unfortunately, most of the critcism here is probably true. I should know since I've had personal experiences and am a medical professional. I've actually seen where a patient with stage III CHF (congestive heart failure) was hooked up to air instead of oxygen by a so-called doctor. I've also seen such elementary mistakes made by the nursing staff as to put the patients life in immediate danger. I've also seen some really exceptional medical service but more often than not, the incompetence is the norm.

Having frim people on the board is one thing, but when there are a lot of haimish working 6 days a week in as many departments as possible it is harder for bad apples to hide there dirty little secrets.
on the other hand if more haimish people worked there there would be better communication and understanding from the frim community when decisions are made that people don't like.

I don’t know about all your stories here, but I have (unfortunately) had in recent months/year a few experiences in Maimonides and had no problem with service. The patients as well as the family were treated with great care and dignity and had no problem with the guards or the nurses. Yes I also had a incident were my father in-law was in the ER for a long time until he got a room and then they postponed a procedure, which he wasn’t allowed to eat, for no good reason and was only done after someone spoke up and said that since his being released is depended on the results and he wanted to be home for shabbs. It was on a Friday after he was in the hospital for 3 days.
Yes there are better hospitals then Maimonides but I want to point out that any hospital that you go to there will always be people that complain about it and will tell you that hospital sucks.
Nobody should ever have to use ANY hospital and be healthy!!!

My grandfather was in the ER on a Friday night as well. I brought him his home-cooked meal and the guards refused to let me in. I was very courteous and well-mannered. It made no difference. They were mean and nasty just the same.

The "patient reps"-(hospital reps) have been calling security on many of the family members. For the crime of trying to explain to staff what meds their loved on is on. One would think they would at least pretend they are "patient reps".

I have a idea why not follow the rules I see a lot of people are complaining but they keep going back to the hospital. Why is it that ever-time someone disagrees with Jewish people they are anti -semitic?

Maimo, is the dumping ground for all foreign grads that come from pakistan, india, mexico. That is, no normal US medical graduate would ever consider coming to their programs and residencies. That in it of itself says loads about the quality of their medicine. In fact they weren't able to hire even 1 united states MD graduate in the past 2007 academic year.

MMC is getting worse by the day. I am no longer working in that hospital. Although I live in Bklyn and wanted to work in a place where there isn't a long commute, because of the cruelty, meanness staff at MMC has towards patients, visitors and even towards Dr's & nurses themselves, I decided to quit my job and will be working in Manhattan at another hospital beginning next Mon. I'd rather deal with the commute than to see & deal with all the nastiness and meanness in MMC.

I had terrible time there when my mother was sick. Some of the nurses should be fired (I was about to say).(To be fair - others were complete angels - that god should them give strength to continue their good work)

Imagine seeing an open syringe alongside a patients bed telling the superior didn't help anything either while the actual nurse is sleeping there in the corner all the meds on the table nobody gives a crap to what goes on in that hell hole SHUT THAT PLACE DOWN!!!!!!!!!

for those who keep claiming that Maimo has "statistically" the best in heart -- Coney Island Hospital, according to the State statistics is better for heart care than Maimo!! Maimo is a substandard hospital by all comparison of statistics (you can do it yourself by researching the web and the State has a site where you can line up the hospitals and do comparisons of them). They abuse patients and families -- and call ACS randomly when they feel they are not being "treated right" by a family or a patient and turn in parents with alleged abuse claims. I still cannot understand why our community shops in Saks and Bloomingdales, looks for the designed labels for their clothes, shoes, linens, etc., but then let their loved ones have a shlock hospital. In NYC, where we have the "designer label" hospitals, some of the best in the country and the world, why would ANY careless person take their family to Maimo?
