Out of the Inbox - Williamsburg - Boro-Park bus - Giving sardine cans a bad name

Sent in by a Chaptzem reader

Hey Chaptzem, why haven't you posted anything about what's going on with the Williamsburg - Boro Park bus?

As a regular daily rider of the bus line I would like to give your readers a little synopsis of what it's like. I live in BP and travel to Williamsburg every day. I can't remember the last time that I had a seat on the bus, or even more, the last time that I wasn't so squashed that I couldn't breath. The buses are old and run down, they shake and rattle the entire trip. All the buses are old and smelly and filling them over the top with people doesn't help that at all.

I come off the bus dizzy and nauseous every day. I have complained numerous times and have never gotten a reply. I can't understand how a company owned by frum yiddishe people that services frum yiddishe people could be so uncaring.

The Williamsburg bus has exclusive rights to the route between Williamsburg and BP, thus disabling any chance for competition and in actuality they have a monopoly, which helps explain the poor service.

I pay for the bus more than I would for mass transit, why do I have to be treated like a sardine in an old clunky beat up can? I am more than willing to pay the extra money if only I would get some decent service for it. I truthfully feel like I am being abused every time I ride the Williamsburg BP bus. It is my hope that this letter will help for something to be done about it.

Comments:
Why do you say they have “exclusive rights?” They may just be the only ones, maybe you should start your own bus company. If you don’t like the bus, take mass transit. Oh wait, you take the Williamsburg bus because of its convenience- don’t complain so much.

the 1st comment is right you dum as- take mass transit. why i say dum as- because you made a complain. do you think anyone gives a rats as- for your complain its all about money money. P.S good luck on your next trip

Have you ever inquired about their "exclusive rights"? It doesn't make too much sense. A new bus company must compete with them on a different route. That is the only solution. Wait and see, as soon as they'll hear about competition, things will improve.

Otherwise, you tell them that you'll take them to court for overcrowding. There's certainly a limit to the amount of passengers they can take.

Save your money, stand at the entrance to the BQE and hitch a ride.

To all the above commenter’s, your deep felt sympathy is greatly appreciated! As always you have come thru in your typical manner which shows how low klal yisroel has fallen, unfortunately. The issue of the Boro-park Williamsburg bus is a long and complicated one. Complaints have been filed hearings held and of course not many heimishe have showed up because we have better things on our mind - similar to the response shown at the polling stations - although the situation has improved of late.

The "out of the inbox" submitter is one hundred percent correct! "private transportation’s busses are in terrible condition and has always amazed me how they are permitted to stay on the roads given the amount of dirt seemingly coming out of their exhaust pipes.....blinding! The rattling of the windows - forget about it! But then again when I see "that Buick" in front of shomer Shabbos with "those hot cups" it's no wonder anymore..........
Yes! They are a convenience – and, we have no choice which is why we continue to use their service however we deserve and should be treated more humanly!

Recently NYCMTA took over the private bus companies (green bus, Jamaica Bus,Command bus)for the same reasons, poor service, old broken buses etc. Let the city take over the Heimish lines too. A private operator will look to pinch pennies.

OK I'm sure I'm not the only operson thinking this. What is "that buick" and "the hot cups" supposed to mean?

it's the same with the crown heights boro park bus which is run by j. hanukov who don't care

Ich been nisht a haymishe New Yorker, but it always amazes me how de frimmer heimishe shmekles don't give a kee hoo zeh for their customers. (I ditched Cholov Yishmael for that reason. Cheese that gets mouldy in a few days, "lowfat" yogurt that either looks and tastes like silly putty, "Kleins heimishe" drek cream, etc.). Bus servce, store customer service, it's all the same. Don't like giving frimmer ze business if I can avoid it, with few exceptions.

Boycott. What makes der heimishe boos coompany zee sole provider? Hassogas g'vil? Nah. Providing a decent service would not be in the same business category model.

And the drivers are road hogs

i know the owner of "that buick" and nebech he has a disease. I forget the name, but his disease is that as soon as he touches something, anything, he can't throw it away. this is the third car that I know of that he has filled up. Once upon a time, the other two, still filled, were parked in his parents' home in flatbush,. He can't throw them away.

Private Transportation is a different story. If they have a franchise from the City it is a wonder that htey weren't taken over by the City last year when the city took over all the other remaining private franchises. Either that, or their francise is like that of the Flatbush Ave dollar vans. The City thinks they are running a dollar van service, like Hokunov.

The real reason that there are only old buses is because all new buses don't have wide enough front & back doors & aisle space for separating the men from the women!

The first two commenters are typical selfish new yorkers with dirty mouths and minds, they can only think about themselfes. for crying out loud the guy that was complaining is PAYING for the trip he is not riding for free and he has the right to get service. there are certain things you do for the sake of living in a normal world and its called manors and treating people like garbage is not acceptable period.

I traveled on that bus for 7 years and have Baruch Hashem began driving on my own now. I pick up people at the "hitch plaza" as often as i can because i know how horrible the bus is. (I am a woman and i also know that only the men usually get picked up for hitches). The bus is horrible- most drivers, with few exceptions, are disgusting and have ansolutely no social skills whatsoever. They talk on their phones the entire time. They have no problem smoking (one of the drivers knew that when he saw me he had to throw out his cigarette because i had no problem going over to the drivers and telling them to stop- most just ignored me and yelled at me to mind my own business and shut up. The last year that i traveled, the did start taking mass transit- which- depending on your location- includes 2 busses and 1 train and takes about 1 hour. The BP- Will bus is a convenience- but it is a disgusting one. I shudder when i see the busses turn now, when i am not on them and see how they sway and move. I did hear that the own exclusive rights to the route - which means that noone can open to compete with them. I also know of one person who had a van- this is going back a few years, who started charging people money for door to door service and picked them up from the bus stops- he says he was threatened by the company numerous times until he stopped. We really have to do something about this- its terrible. and to anon 10:11- please dont use such language on a jewish blog- i know you will want to tell me to "sh the f up" and the likes but it this really isnt the place. you dont know who you are saying it to and what it could be doing to a person.

Thanks

problem is, the people who "fight" for the good of our community do not ride the bus 'cause they have their own car, and therefor do not care about it, but just like any other accomplishment in public service; feel along with the middle class and give them comfort & opportunity they deserve, the 'gvar alim' [the big brother of the block] just got hold of the service and would not let go.

lets do the smart thing and fight for our brother & sister who have no other choice but to ride on these below human buses & give them what they deserve.

You mention how you could just take MTA instead. So just do that, and stop complaining. No one is forcing you to take the BP bus!

MAYBE YOU SHOULD BUY MEAT BY FINKEL

What about the Monsey bus? My daughter takes it all the time. It smells, is filthy, and they wrap that crazy curtain around the women so that they cant breathe. I am paying a fortune for a decent ride, and this is what she gets...never mind the pushing and shoving of the men, getting on and off...and NO HELP with heavy luggage off the bottom of the bus, the men just stand there like dummies..PLEASE do something about this, Monsey bus company!
