Israel renames unkosher swine flu

Israeli Health Minister Yakov Litzman has been updating a nervous public on the swine flu epidemic - and he started by renaming it for religious reasons.

"We will call it Mexican flu. We won't call it swine flu," said Mr Litzman, who belongs to the ultra-religious United Torah Judaism party.

Pigs are considered unclean under Jewish dietary laws. Muslims also do not eat pork for similar reasons.

Israel has yet to confirm a case of the flu which has claimed 100 lives.

Mr Litzman said there was no indication the virus had reached Israel, but precautionary measures and monitoring wwer required because of the heavy air traffic between Israel and the US, which has a number of confirmed cases.

Comments:
I like Kol Mevasers name better. He named it "Duver Achar Flu".

don't think the mexicans are too clean, either.

Some imbecile!

How can a country that produces so many doctors have such a naar heading the ministry of health?

Why are all of you calling hime names? Back in germany the germans used to say DI SHVINE DI whatever but this partticular expressions is demeaning in many ways. Actually I think the expression was the JUDA SHVINE something to that affect. Also the Torah tells you to use positive words dirty language and name calling can get allow you to lose many years of Gan Eden. there for lets work on our own middos before calling peoplee in power and in general calling people names.

If you look in to this in history allways the place where the flu started the call it on the name from that land country like there is a sucha thing like Russian flu Hong Kong flu Swedish flu ect so whats the big deal
And if you look in to the European newspapers like In Germany or Belium they are calling it strait from the beging Mexican Flu so i dont see the bid deal its just a Israeli prapoganda against the religus Health Min

Anonymous April 29, 2009 2:18 AMWhat language is your post written in? For your information, the word the Germans used was "schwein" as if that has anything to do with the subject.

And who used vulgar language? If "swine flu" is vulgar, then what would you call "cancer" or "heart disease?"

Buy a new history book.

I guess you never heard of BIRD flu or CANINE flu. Instead of getting your health information from the kolel, perhaps you should look at the Centers For Disease Control. http://www.cdc.gov/flu/
