NY fire chief takes issue with New Square volunteers
A suburban New York fire chief is taking issue with unsanctioned volunteer firefighters.
On Monday, Hillcrest firefighters responded to a blaze at the grand rabbi's home in the ultra-orthodox Jewish community of New Square. They found volunteer firefighters dousing the flames.
Hillcrest Fire Chief Kim Weppler worries that the volunteers might injure themselves or others because they lack proper training and equipment.
Weppler says that about a year ago, he began noticing a makeshift firetruck the size of an ambulance turning up at fires around New Square. He said volunteers often failed to contact the Hillcrest department.
The village insists it has a friendly relationship with Hillcrest and Rockland County fire administrators.
Deputy Mayor Israel Spitzer says village officials want to meet with Rockland fire officials. The volunteers also hope to get training.
