Interesting Frum-magnet business practices

This same ad with this same picture of Chasidishe bocherim rafting has been used by this place for years and years. I wonder if these bocherim even know that their mugs have been bringing this guy business from the Frum community for so many years. Also, if you look at the ad, the guy says to call and ask for 'Yidel', his name is really 'Julius' (as he is called by everyone during the entire year) and he only uses the name 'Yidel' to get Frum people to think that he is 'fin inzere'.

Apple shows anti-Semitic side by releasing iPhone minutes before Jewish Sabbath

After six months of unprecedented hype, thousands of people Friday will get their hands on the iPhone, the new cell phone that Apple Inc. is banking on to become its third core business next to its moneymaking iPod players and Macintosh computers.

By early evening Thursday, short lines of eager customers were camped out at Apple and AT&T stores across the nation. The gadget, which combines the functions of a cell phone, iPod media player and wireless Web browser, will go on sale in the United States at 6 p.m. Friday in each time zone.

At Apple's flagship store in New York City, the trickle of customers that began queuing up since Monday grew to about 50 people late Thursday, ready to brave yet another rainy night on the pavement of Fifth Avenue, outside the only 24-hour Apple store.

"It's pretty miserable sleeping in the rain, but it's worth it," said a tired David Clayman, who was second in line at the store and had gotten a total of eight hours of sleep over four days, awakened at times by TV camera crews shining bright lights in his eyes. The Chicago resident vacationing in New York planned to buy two iPhones — one to resell to raise money for a charity and another as a gift for his father.

The gadget with a 3.5-inch touch-screen display, which Apple CEO Steve Jobs has touted as "revolutionary," has been the focus of endless anticipatory chatter and has been parodied on late-night TV. Since its unveiling in January, expectations that it will become yet another blockbuster product for Apple has propelled the company's stock up more than 40 percent.

An open retort letter on the Meshichist issue

Zalman, the Lubavitcher, writes a letter to retort comments on his original letter on the Meshichist issue.

B"H

I would like to make one thing clear. My point was not to ChasVsholom bash baalie teshuvos. On the contrary I stand in awe of the sincere baalie teshuvos who often have to make major personal sacrifices in order to make the transition into the frummeh velt. They are often shunned and mocked by family and friends and they have to change their diet, dress and thought process. They need to make a very awkward transition from what they once were to a person who is now fully shomrie Torah U'mitzvos. It's not easy and I salute them!

On the other hand, the Jew needs to elevate him or her self to the Torah, and NOT that Torah should be lowered to the standards of the Jew. Unfortunately many of these yellow flag people took the most external trappings of Yiddishkiet and Chassidus and shun the real and true part of them. It is much easier to scream, jump and parade then it is to honestly work on your Avodas Hashem by means of true Cheshbon Hanefesh as true Chassidus demands of oneself.

I understand that many of you miss those psychedelic mushroom highs you experienced in India after the army, or the crazy nights dancing like never before in the trance-clubs in Tel Aviv. It must have been terrific. But please don't try to bring this way of life into our lives. Lubavitch has always had a very tolerant attitude toward non-religious Jews and that's a good thing. But remember that you have come into our world and not vice versa.

Lubavitch is based on PNIMIYUS, it is a mehalech which a Yid is expected to strive every day to work on his character and strengthen his kesher with the Echod she b'olom. The warped version seen today practiced by the Yellow Brigade is nothing but a perversion. Many of them mean well but that's not an excuse, and regrettably there are some in their group that are pure evil, these get a twisted satisfaction of destroying hundreds of years of hard work and toil.

Remember it is far easier to destroy then it is to build, for every hundred normal Lubavitcher Chassidim all it takes is one retard to vaporize the good work that they do. And we have more then our fair share of retards.

An open letter from a Lubavitcher about the Meshichist issue

B"H

To my fellow Lubavitchers who actually care about 300 years of Toras Hachassidus, Yiras Shomayim and Emes. Please stop defending these 'Taliban Jihadists'. They are dead wrong and they are single-handedly responsible for shlepping our Rebbe in the mud.

On Gimmel Tammuz the day when the Rebbe ascends b'ginzie miromimim, these quacks have the chutzpa to pull off such a stunt, it's just heartbreaking.

The fault is ours, the reason Lubavitch's holy name is so tarnished is because we refuse to act. Like dear caught in the headlights we are disgusted when we see the antics of the 'Tzvatim' but we refuse to act. Our Rabbonim, mashpiyim and leaders hide their head in the sand and pretend that when we get criticism for this "they always hated Chabad". WHAT GARBAGE!!

What do you expect frummeh, erlicheh Yidden to say when they see these vans of destruction rolling through their neighborhoods blasting their music? How do you expect them to react?

I am sorry but I think the outrage towards us is justified. We posses a sick group in our midst who listen to no one, b'davka perpetuate fights and dissent and cause a huge Chilul Hashem to put it lightly. A sick limb needs to be treated and if it's untreatable sometimes an amputation is in order.

Many of my fellow Lubavitchers are going to get very angry at what I am saying. "Why wash our dirty laundry in public? Why bash fellow Chassidim?" The answer is they really have nothing to do with my Lubavitch. FINISHED. My grandfather didn't need to sit in Siberia for five years for teaching an illegal Cheder in Belarus to see his beloved Lubavitch sink to such garbage. The mesiras nefesh of 7 heiligeh Rebbeim didn't need to disintegrate because of the actions of a bunch of Johnny-come-lately baaley teshuvos who know better then everyone else what Hakodosh Boruch Hu REALLY wants.

Wake up and smell the coffee. This is our mess, our Frankenstein; if we don't deal with it then the blame lies with us.

To all other non-Lubavitcher Yidden: Look, this is a group of loonies, to say they are tiny would be a lie. In Eretz Yisroel they have gained popularity and have attracted many to their stupidity. The good news is that here in USA they have turned most people off from their message and most American Bochrim and Yungerleit want nothing to do with them. The rift has grown and the divide is stronger each and every year. From me personally, I can only offer my apologize even though I had nothing to do with their junk I feel somewhat responsible. Maybe I should have slashed their tires or something but that's not really who I am. They sicken me, my family and the majority of my friends. Trust me please, WE DON'T LIKE THEM AT ALL.

So again, sorry. Maybe some of you can offer some constructive suggestions how we can rid ourselves of this plague. Honestly it seems like we are incapable of dealing with this in-house.

Let's end this off on a positive note. Let us each add in our Avodah to the Aibishter, whether it been in Limmud Hatorah, Gmilus Chassodim or Tefilah. May the Ribbono Shel Olom see our sincerity and send us Moshiach Tzidkeinu and grant us the Geulo HOAMITIS ve'hashleimus immediately and rid us of this nightmare.

Kol Tuv,
Zalman

Abuse rabbis to lose title

The Chief Rabbinate will discuss a proposal to strip rabbis found guilty of sexual offenses of their title, Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The matter arose following an ongoing investigation against a Nahariya rabbi for raping minors.

Safed Chief Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu came up with the proposal, according to which a committee will be set up to examine accusations against rabbis accused of sexual offenses and will hear all parties before revoking the rabbi's title.

In a letter sent to the members of the Chief Rabbinate, Eliyahu wrote, "Someone in the position of a rabbi should be a man of values, moral and conscience, an impeccable man, and certainly innocent of forbidden sexual relations.

"It is our duty as rabbis and members of Israel's Chief Rabbinate to set rules according to which a man who is suspected of forbidden relations is temporarily suspended from his role. A man who confesses must not be able to serve as rabbi in a public role."

The subject will be discussed at the Rabbinate's next meeting on Thursday.

BEWARE - Penalties now being issued to Frum Jury Duty dodgers

According to an inside source, there is now an extra effort being made to penalize and fine Frum people that try to get away from attending Jury Duty. According to the source, the cause of this problem is that a woman that has worked for an anti-Semitic Judge for many years has now been moved to the Jury part. The woman has a personal vendetta against Frum people and claims that she is aware of all their shenanigans and won't let them get away with it anymore. If you receive a Jury Duty summons either attend at the set time or send it back with an excuse, ignoring it will now result in a first-time $250 fine and second-time $1000 fine.

Fearing Wal-Mart Will Bring Too Much of the Outside In

It seems whenever Wal-Mart proposes a new store, controversy sprouts. Across the country, environmentalists, unions, civic associations and churches have objected to the retailer’s plans to drop anchor in their communities, citing concerns about traffic and crime, merchandise and employment policies and the overall quality of life.

But the protest of a planned 215,000-square-foot store here has a decidedly religious overtone.

When residents talk about traffic, they are fearful for the safety of families walking to synagogue on Saturdays. When they fret about merchandise, they wonder if frowned-upon items like bikinis and lingerie will be on display for everyone to see. And when they imagine the outsiders who would shop at the store, they worry that their presence could transform the town’s pious, sheltered atmosphere.

“The reason a lot of us came to live in Monsey is because we wanted to raise our families in a safe place, away from the influences of the outside world,” said Yossi Weinberger, 30, a father of four who works at a local travel agency. “I’m not sure it will be easy to do it if we have such a gigantic piece of the outside world move to our town.”

Philip H. Serghini, a public affairs manager for Wal-Mart, has visited the community of 28,000, most of them Hasidic Jews, at least six times since October. He has met in private with about two dozen rabbis to explain the company’s proposal to turn a shuttered drive-in theater on Route 59 into a retail magnet for miles around.

But two years after Wal-Mart unveiled its plan, opposition persists, as the Community Design Review Committee, an advisory group to the Planning Board in Ramapo, of which Monsey is a part, reviews the project’s environmental impact statement.

The truth about Noach Dear and his Civil Court Judge campaign

Noach Dear is a loser!

Noach Dear has lost more elections for more positions than consecutive terms that Dov Hikind has served as Assemblyman. He has also failed the bar exam almost as many times as he has lost elections. So now you're thinking, "Ok, so he's not the smartest guy around. So what?" The truth is Noach did not lose those elections due to his limited mental capacity, he lost them because of his attitude towards potential voters. Instead of asking or begging for votes, he screamed and yelled and demanded them.

Now for the things that really count. The things that we should look at in Noach's past to see what kind of candidate he really is. His track record.

The fact is Noach Dear is indirectly responsible for much of the carnage that took place during the Crown Heights riots. He openly spoke in public of the Black's right to 'express themselves'. He sure has a weird definition for the word 'expression'. Furthermore, when Black leaders were negotiating with Cops after the riots to march past 770 in Crown Heights, Noach Dear was the first to suggest to the Cops that they should allow it, because it was their 'right' to do so. Noach took this initiative to egg on their march and direct it past 770 against suggestions from safety and law experts that were completely against it.

Further, the fact is Noach Dear instantly took sides with the Police against Gideon Bush before a full investigation had taken place. That's right, he sided with the Cops who shot and killed a mentally ill Jewish man who was seen holding a hammer. I wonder how safe Noach will feel as a Judge holding a hammer in court with so many Cops around him.

I agree, we should support a Frum candidate whenever possible and that is what Noach is counting on. He hopes that we will look away from his track record and that we will look at him and say, "Ah, a Frum Yid, let's vote for him." What he does not tell you is that because of him running for Judge another Frum Yid, more qualified than him, was pushed out of the campaign. Just keep that in mind.

Police will outnumber feigelech at Pride parade

The Israeli capital Jerusalem is preparing for a gay Pride march this afternoon. Despite violent protest from Orthodox Jewish groups the event will go ahead.

Around 5,000 people are expected to take part, protected by 7,000 police officers.

Earlier in the week 10,000 religious Jews protested and rioted, burning tyres and attacking police cars.

Yesterday the Israeli Supreme Court ruled the parade should go ahead.

Jerusalem Pride has been denounced by conservative Jewish, Christian and Muslim leaders who regard the city as holy.

"The question of 'why in Jerusalem' is not a question. It is the same question as letting women vote," said Dana Olmert, daughter of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, a lesbian, in an interview with Israel's Army radio.

In 2005, an Orthodox Jewish protester stabbed and wounded three people at Jerusalem Pride.

Koch on Bloomberg: ‘He’d Be a Fine President’

If Mayor Michael Bloomberg casts his hat into the 2008 presidential race, he has the blessing of a predecessor at New York’s City Hall, Ed Koch.

Speaking to the Forward by telephone this morning, the former New York City mayor said he would welcome a run by Bloomberg.

“Oh yes, I think he’d be a fine president,” Koch said.

Along with their stints in the mayor’s office and Jewish backgrounds, Koch and Bloomberg share a maverick streak. Bloomberg announced yesterday that he was leaving the Republican party. A longtime Democrat, Bloomberg switched parties shortly before his run for mayor. For his part, Koch, a Democrat who served as mayor from 1978 to 1989, broke with his party to back President Bush’s reelection in 2004.

This campaign season, however, Koch has expressed enthusiasm for the candidacy of New York’s Senator Hillary Clinton. In his weekly New York Press column, Koch has written that he hopes to be “able to take a role in the campaign to elect her as President of the United States.”

Koch, who delivers commentaries on Bloomberg Radio, told the Forward that he is standing firm in his support for Clinton in the Democratic primaries. He did not, however, close the door on backing a Bloomberg candidacy.

“My support for Hillary is in the Democratic primary,” Koch said. “If Bloomberg were to come in, I would consider it at that time as to which of the two I’ll be supporting. I don’t have to make any determination now, because he is not yet a candidate.”

The mensches for the job

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, a blonde in an electric blue suit, stood out in a sea of black yarmulkes.

"Israel may be on the front lines," she said. "It faces a common threat to our traditions, our values, our beliefs, and it should be our common cause."

Clearly, the candidate knows her audience.

She wasn't the only one. Eight senators, two of them presidential candidates, addressed an audience of 90 Orthodox Jews who were enjoying a kosher lunch and some politics in the Hart Senate Office Building last week.

Every speaker bent over backward to proclaim his or her support for Israel, and most also stressed the growing threat from Iran.

For a group representing just 10 percent of an estimated 5.3 million Jews in the United States, the Orthodox Union attracts an interesting mix of political players. After saying afternoon prayers, the union met with White House spokesman Tony Snow. The night before, its members ate dinner with Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito.

The union's members were no schleppers, either.

The audience included high-profile Orthodox Jewish advocates including Howard Friedman, the first Orthodox president of the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee, Rabbinical Council of America President Rabbi Shlomo Hochberg and Allen Fagin, managing partner of Proskauer Rose, one of the biggest law firms in the country.

Five condo buildings are going up in Kiryas Joel

Workers continue with a flurry of construction to meet the growing demand for housing, social services and jobs in this burgeoning village of about 18,000 Hasidim.

Village Administrator Gedalye Szegedin said the primary goals of his municipality are to address the need for more affordable housing, health services for women and jobs in a community with a median household income of $18,300, according to the Census Bureau's 2005 figures.

There are more than five new condominium sites under construction, which will add more than 450 units to the supply of housing. The largest site, Bakertown Condominiums, will provide 346 units and is located on a hill that will become the extension of Dinev Court, behind the village's future business center.

Szegedin said the village is on schedule to complete the five-story, 80,000-square-foot business center at the corner of Bakertown Road and Route 105 by the end of the year. Plans for the construction of the multipurpose business facility initially stalled around 2003, when the village failed to lure larger corporate investors to the site, prompting banks to withdraw financing.

However, construction on the $8- to $10-million project moved forward, and small Hasidic businesses in and around the village should move in upon completion, Szegedin said. The village is also planning to build a 160-space park and ride with a bus depot next to the business center to offer more convenient transportation for village residents to get to New York City.

The village, which has offices on the second floor of a two-story shopping strip on Forest Road, will move into a large section of the business center's second floor. Szegedin said the village has not given up on courting a corporate employer that could provide jobs for Kiryas Joel residents.

Kiryas Joel Union Free Schools is expected to move its public school for special education students from its current location on Kahan Drive to a 40,000-square-foot building under construction on Bakertown Road, near the business center. The new building will drastically expand the school's current capacity, as well as add new jobs, Szegedin said.

Next to the new public school, workers are completing the foundation for the future Hamaspik Day Rehabilitation, a 30,000-square-foot residential facility for severely handicapped children and adults. The facility is an expansion of Hamaspik's services, which includes multiple buildings throughout Monroe.

A nonprofit organization catering to improving women's health is nearing completion of an $11 million, 50,000-square-foot Women's Services Center off county Route 44 just behind the Emergency Services Center. That facility will primarily provide prenatal and postnatal health care and social services for women and their infants.

Another nonprofit recently completed the 40,000- square-foot Keren Plaza Banquet Hall on Forest Road, next to the shopping strip, to provide space for the numerous religious-based ceremonies and celebrations of Kiryas Joel families, Szegedin said.

"People have large families, and they have small apartments, and they don't have a place for all these functions," Szegedin said.

UPDATE - TODDLER MOWED DOWN BY DRIVER, 84

An 18-month-old Brooklyn boy was killed yesterday by an elderly neighbor driving to a Father's Day party - who didn't notice and kept on going, cops and neighbors said.

Michael Evans was playing under the watchful eye of his doting mother just before 6 p.m. when he wandered near the driveway of an 84-year-old woman on East 26th Street just as she was backing out.

She apparently never realized she'd struck the toddler as she headed to her family's affair.

"All I heard was screaming - terrified, crazy screaming," said a witness.

The boy's mother was the first to see his crushed body.

"I ran to console her. She couldn't talk. Her legs were shaking," said another neighbor on the block in Midwood.

"This is a tragedy. They're lovely people," said another resident. "I came out and saw the father holding him. He was black and blue - his entire body, feet, head, arms."

People on the block agreed that the mother is extremely attentive.

"She is a very good mother," said Jason Goodman, 27. "She always watched him, always kept an eye on the kid."

At Kings County Hospital, where the boy was pronounced dead, Rabbi Avraham Lider said the mother was in a daze.

"When I met with her, she could not remember anything. She said the child just wandered a little bit," he said.

"The father just said to me, 'I wish God took my life instead of my son's.' "

Mayer Berger, a volunteer first responder with Chesed Shel Emes emergency services, said the family was forgiving.

"The baby was on the sidewalk and somebody backed out of the driveway - the kid was in the driveway. They said they had nothing against the woman driver, it's an accident," said Berger.

The funeral is today.

Police don't expect to charge the driver.

Two-year-old child killed in Flatbush

A two-year-old child that had apparently been hit by a car was found by his mother in the driveway at a side entrance to the home. Exactly what happened is currently unclear, because there was no car at the scene or one seen leaving. Police speculate that a car hit the child while pulling into the driveway to make a u-turn out of the dead-end street. Detectives are currently reviewing footage from home security cameras in an effort to find some leads on the case.

Dov Hikind does tshuvah, endorses Noach Dear

Almost no one could have predicted it, but Assemblyman Dov Hikind is endorsing longtime rival Noach Dear for Civil Court judge in Brooklyn.

"We're both older," said Hikind. "We both have children. We both have grandchildren. Life goes on. He's running, and I support him."

Orthodox Jews Hikind and Dear represented the same Borough Park neighborhood before term limits forced Dear off the City Council in 2001.

Frum WIC worker harasses women in Boro-Park

We are posting this as per an overwhelming readership request.

There is a Frum person, with a yarmulka and beard, named David, that works in the Boro-Park WIC office on Fort Hamilton Parkway and 56th Street, who harasses the women clients while he serves them. According to many client accounts he will ask very personal questions (NOT financial or WIC related) and will whisper them, asking the women to bend in closer to hear what he is saying. Many times after getting an answer to a personal question from an unsuspecting woman he will then admonish her for what she had said to him and will tell her that he disapproves of it. Also, when serving a woman he will purposely make them wait for a very long time for no apparent reason and will keep on going back for erroneous things that he supposedly forgot, hassling them all the while.

We have been getting many messages to post this story from numerous people sporadically over the last few weeks but have held out posting it until we investigated the matter and made attempts to have it worked out. We interviewed many of his victims and got very similar reports. We also spoke to his supervisor who said that she had received many complaints against him and that because he was a union worker there was not much more she could do than to warn him. She said that if any real action was to be taken to rectify the situation there would have to be letters sent to the main WIC office by regular citizens.

The Times Herald Record, big on anti-Semitism, small on common sense

The latest article to bash Hasidic Jews printed in the Times Herald Record rag about the arrest of the Monroe Mayor (yes, arrest, this is English) did wonders to reveal the true sentiments of the paper and their writing staff. The article, penned by John Sullivan, goes through more loops than a Six Flags roller coaster to make it look like Monroe Mayor John Karl III was the victim of a Hasidic Jew, when by all witness accounts it is quite clear that the Mayor was actually the aggressor and had overstepped both his professional and personal boundaries and had behaved inappropriately with Mr. Goldberger.

The Record is not concerned in the least bit of the wrongdoing that was perpetrated here by a government official onto another human being, but would rather focus on the fact that there was a Hasidic Jew involved and that a Hasidic web-site misused the word 'arrested'.

The Record needs to get rid of their ugly and destructive anti-Semitic and anti-Hasidic agenda and start putting the onus where it belongs.

As for the definition of the word 'arrested', the Record does not even need to go as far as to look into a dictionary to find the correct definition, but at their own published material which uses the exact word quite often to define the same situation.

Amazingly enough, since Times Herald Record writer Chris McKenna left his position as Kiryas Joel reporter, the Times Herald Record had no problem finding someone that shared his views, such as John Sullivan, to replace him.

Guardian Angels to meet with armed citizens' patrol

An 18-year-old man was shot to death late Tuesday in Edgewood Park, a day after a citizen's group said it was arming itself to combat rampant street crime in that area of the city.

The park slaying was the second shooting death Tuesday. Earlier in the day, a 30-year-old man was gunned down on nearby George Street in the city's West River section, and later died at the Hospital of Saint Raphael. The two deaths were the city's fourth and fifth homicides of the year and the third and fourth this month.

The killings came on the same day as the Guardian Angels pledged to meet with Orthodox Rabbi Daniel Greer and other Edgewood neighborhood activists who Monday announced the formation of the armed Edgewood Park Defense Patrol, claiming police were not doing enough to keep the area's residents safe.

In New Hampshire town, a cultural widening

Kosher history was made in this North Country town as clerks at the Bethlehem Village Store recently moved aside boxes of Luvs diapers and cases of Budweiser to make way for Manischewitz matzo meal, borscht, gefilte fish, potato pancake mix, and Tam-Tam crackers.

"The store is recognizing that there are other people who exist," said Harold Friedman , 76, a Bethlehem selectman and resident of six years, by way of Long Island. "It's wonderful."

Brookline, it is not. But Bethlehem, population 2,300, has become an unusual rural scene. Jews from across the country have taken up residence in and around this faded resort town, lured in part by the area's rugged beauty, but especially by the proximity to members of a common faith.

Jewish culture, far more prevalent in urban and suburban settings, now threads through this outlying town, which has a lone blinking traffic light and grassy knolls where elegant hotels once stood on Main Street. The recent influx has propelled an ongoing tutorial for long time residents in the ways of synagogues and Jewish burial and the rules of kosher food.

The scenes unfold everywhere. Bethlehem's Colonial Theater this summer will host a Jewish film festival. The town's five-member Board of Selectmen includes two Jewish members. The non denominational synagogue, a former Episcopal church, is now open year-round for regular services, a Hebrew school, and bar and bat mitzvahs.

Meanwhile, the Hasidic Jews who make summer pilgrimages from New York, speaking Yiddish and generally keeping to themselves, are comingling as well. This summer they will begin construction on a year-round hotel that will cater to Jews and non-Jews.

A two-hour police search for a reported gunman yesterday turned out to be anything but. Police reported this morning that the incident was sparked by a single shot fired by a young girl in a home in the Town of Woodbury. Police said there was no armed gunman and no home invasion, as originally suspected

Troopers, sheriff’s deputies with K-9 units and Woodbury and Blooming Grove police searched the area around Bakerstown Road between Acres and Seven Springs Road Monday evening for what was then described as a white male, about six-feet in height.

Because the shot was fired near the densely-populated village, schools were shut down and children immediately bused home at 4 p.m.

FIGHT FOR YESHIVA TUITION BREAKS - YOU MUST ACT NOW

One sixty second phone call to this toll-free number could save our community millions of dollars: (800) 319 - 3403.

With just two weeks left in the Legislative session in Albany, now is the time to act to help families who are struggling to pay yeshiva tuition. Assemblyman Vito Lopez & Senator Marty Golden have introduced legislation that would allow middle-class parents to deduct the cost of private school tuition from their state taxes and poor families would receive an actual tax credit. This could save average families in our community thousands of dollars each year.

But we must ACT NOW. The legislative session in Albany ends June 21st

Please call Governor Spitzer's office today at (800) 319 - 3403.

If you speak with a live operator, please tell them:

"I'm calling to ask the Governor to support the Lopez-Golden Tuition Tax Deduction Bill."

If you reach a voice mailbox, DO NOT HANG UP. Each message is logged and counts!

After the tone, leave the same message along with your zip code:

"I am calling to ask the Governor to support the Lopez-Golden Tuition Tax Deduction Bill. My zip code is XXXXX."

Governor Spitzer has the ability to get this done. But he must hear from you and everyone you know.

It's a simple call (800) 319 - 3403.

Every single call made to the Governor is logged and will make a difference!

Shopping Mothers, Neglected Babies

Letter to the Editor at the Jewish Press:

Recently, I was walking past a store in a frum neighborhood and saw two unattended babies in carriages. Being that I was on my cell phone, I loudly said I would watch the unattended babies until the mothers returned. A few minutes later, a lady came out and said, rather irritably, “The mother is here!” This mother, obviously perturbed that I had suggested her baby was being neglected, glared at me.

This is not the first time I witnessed such an incident and intervened. Leaving babies unsupervised in carriages may have become something of a “conventional” practice in the frum community, but how, exactly, is it not out-and-out neglect?

Brooklyn is not a place where crimes never occur. We frequently hear of incidents in our communities. So why do people assume their unattended babies are safe? You rarely see an unattended bike, even in your own communities, without a chain or padlock. But unattended carriages with babies inside – well, that’s an entirely different story.

Dear mother, do you not realize how easy is it for someone to walk away with a child when there are several other abandoned baby carriages on a busy avenue? If a store does not allow carriages, leave it outside and take your baby in. Would you ever consider leaving your pocket book in the carriage and walking into a store?

Once, I saw an unsupervised toddler in a carriage outside a pizza store. I walked into the store and announced that someone “forgot” a baby outside. A mother eating pizza grunted to her daughter to go watch the baby. How can a mother leisurely sit and eat pizza while her baby is left alone on the street?

Besides the obvious dangers of leaving a baby unattended, how can you be sure the carriage will not roll into the gutter? All infant seats, swings, highchairs, etc. have warning labels about not leaving children unattended. If children must be supervised even when inside a home, how much more so out on the street?

Another personal experience: A stroller left outside a store with packages on the handles suddenly tipped over. I ran to the carriage, which contained a crying toddler, and tried to rebalance it but it kept tipping over. I waited with the carriage until the mother came out of the store with yet more bags. How can a mother go shopping without even bothering to check on her baby left alone outside?

Mothers, your children are invaluable! As a caregiver, it is a parent’s responsibility to ensure that babies and young children are supervised at all times. Unsupervised children are neglected children. Period.

Non-Kosher food sold at ice cream store on 13th Avenue and 46th Street

The ice cream store on 13th Avenue and 46th Street has changed ownership and appearance, and according to sources, kosher food practices as well. The store is now, reportedly, owned and operated by long-time bakante dreikup, Menachem Edelstein, who just arrived back from Florida after going incognito for over twenty years. According to sources who have done some investigating into the matter, the ice cream toppings and popcorn that were sold at the store were not kosher. Furthermore, the ice cream that the store carries was being sold as Klein's but in reality was not, it was found to come from J & J. Also, workers at the store were observed mixing up the Pareve utensils with the Milichige ones. The store currently does now carry a Kosher certification, but as always, a store's certification is as good as it's proprietor.

Why didn't Satmar think of this?

A new system has just been installed in 770 informing if there is a Choson in shul, so you would know if you have to say Tachnun or not.

If you are a Choson during sheva brochos, you are kindly asked to walk up to the umud and choose the amount of time you will be in 770 and the light will remain on till you leave. In an event that you leave earlier you can go and shut it off.

Urgent – Pidyon Shivuyim (You can take part in the mitzvah this second!)

A heimishe yungerman was just arrested early this morning (Wednesday June 6. 2007) on the Palisades Interstate Parkway on his way back from the Skverrer Rebbe’s grandsons Chasunah. A police car had been following him for some time, but never turned on its lights or tried to pull him over. When the police finally turned on the emergency lights, the yungerman pulled right over. The police officer came over to the car and asked why he made him chase him. The yungerman answered that he didn’t make them chase him at all and that as soon as he turned on the lights he pulled over. The cop said “don’t be a wise a**” and pulled him out of the car, and threw him to the ground and arrested him.

The yungerman is at this moment sitting in the Palisades Police Station in handcuffs, and has not been allowed to even be given a yarmulka to cover his head. The cops said they won’t release him until sometime during the day because they can’t find the judge. This is nonsense, because they can release him with an appearance ticket. Please immediately call the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Station and demand that they release him immediately. The number is: 201-768-6001.

Here’s an idea of what to say: “I’m calling about the guy you arrested on the Parkway. It’s an outrage that you’re holding him and you should please release him now!”

Vandals steal mezuzah from apartment building in Boro-Park

Vandals tore a mezuzah off the outer doorway of an apartment building in Boro-Park. The doorway from where the mezuzah was stolen was open to the street and was accessible to anyone. The mezuzah was in a white plastic holder and was easy to break. In order to insure that this doesn't happen to your mezuzah, buy a high quality mezuzah holder and install it securely. Even though it is not break-proof, chances are if it takes some time to break, vandals will ignore it.

The New York Post gets it wrong with William 'Zev' Ballen

The New York Post claimed in an article that a Frum licensed Social Worker from Monsey, William 'Zev' Ballen, had been reprimanded last year for falsely claiming to be a Psychotherapist. The New York Post got it wrong on this one. According to New York State law a licensed Social Worker may call themself a Psychotherapist and may practice Psychotherapy. The actual charge against William Ballen last year was that he called himself a Psychologist, which is a false portrayal and is against the law in New York State.

Here is the Journal News article from last year.

Working hard to drive down the crime rate - 66th Police Precinct salutes crackerjack cop

They’re making the nabe a better place by knocking out one crime at a time.

Cops from the 66th Precinct honored another stalwart fighter in the war against crime last week by honoring Police Officer Davida Welch as cop of the month for May.

During a recent meeting of the 66th Precinct Community Council, held at the Community Board 12 offices, Captain Peter DeBlasio, the commanding officer of the 66th Precinct, honored the anti-crime cop for apprehending three muggers responsible for attacking a Hasidic man in early April, as well as collaring a man wanted for a burglary.

He explained that officers like Welch are helping to ensure that crime continues to fall in both Borough Park and Kensington.

Boy accused of burning down synagogue

Ramapo police today arrested a 15-year-old boy on a felony charge accusing him of burning down a Monsey synagogue used by an anti-Israel group.

The boy was playing with matches and recklessly started the fire that destroyed Congregation Bais Yehudi on April 1, Ramapo Detective Lt. Brad Weidel said.

The Saddle River Road building housed a rabbi and his family and was used by Netura Karta. The anti-Zionist religious group believes only the biblical Messiah can create a state of Israel and that Jews there should live under Arab rule until that day comes.

Police charged the youth with fourth-degree criminal mischief.

His case has been referred to the Rockland Family Court for disposition of the charge because of his age. The boy is scheduled to appear in court on June 26.
